Hi All This is a general notice to all Playism titles. From June 14th onwards, I (Cheru) will no longer be Playism's community manager. After over 4 years of working passionately in Playism, I have decided to leave and change direction. I am sad that I won't be working and playing with you all as a member of Playism anymore, however, I will still be around on Steam. Playing Yume Nikki: Dream Diary is like sitting across from somebody as they explain their dreams to you in great detail. No. Worse than that. It’s like listening to somebody describe an acquaintance’s dreams in great detail. Every now and then, they pause and say something along the lines of, you had to be there , as people do when they’re telling a funny story that nobody is laughing at. In its transition from tiny sprites, abstract backgrounds and obscure free-form exploration to jerky 3d animation and side-scrolling running and jumping, Yume Nikki has lost almost all of its mysterious horror and charm . Time flies, eh? It feels like just a month ago that Japanese media conglomerate Kadokawa announced a successor to minimalist indie adventure Yume Nikki , working in close collaboration with Kikiyama, mysterious developer of the original game, and it’s almost here already. Oh. It was just a month ago. Sneaking up on us like a particularly unsettling memory of a nightmare, Yume Nikki: Dream Diary is less than a day from release. Accompanying this news is a rather unsettling trailer, painting a somewhat darker picture of protagonist Madotsuki’s dreams than anything we saw first time round. (more…)

I hadn’t heard of Yume Nikki until a fortnight ago, when the Japanese cult classic explore-o-horror popped up on Steam after over a decade and a sequel was announced. After reading Giada Zavarise’s praise of the first one , I feel I’ve really missed something. I’m now on a timer to catch up, as the publishers today announced that sequel Yume Nikki: Dream Diary will arrive on February 23rd. It’s no longer the work of enigmatic solo creator Kikiyama but an entire team, and the sequel’s also jumping from RPG Maker’s 2D to fancy 3D. (more…)
