• A Panel Shaped Screen: which run of The Darkness should you read? - 24 January 2019

A Panel Shaped Screen is a monthly column where Giada Zavarise explores how comics and video games inspire each other. This week she looks at how The Darkness was adapted, and which run of the comic would suit you the best. The Darkness II is a game about being a mafia hitman, shooting everyone, and feeding the hearts of your enemies to the black abomination coiled inside your chest. But it s also a game about fighting your darkest self, doubting your own mind, and finding salvation in love. When John reviewed it , he said: I was genuinely expecting a brash, stupid shooter, noise and bluster and shooting at heads. That it s so smart is a fantastic surprise . The Darkness II (like its console exclusive predecessor) is actually based on a comic book series, first published in the nineties. (more…)

• The Darkness 2 is currently free on PC - 27 March 2018

For a very limited time (just over a day and a half at the time of writing), PC owners are able to snag a free copy of what I, personally, would deem one of the most overlooked games of the last few years - The Darkness 2 . Head over to Humble today and you can claim a free copy of the 2012 paranormal mafia shooter for absolutely nothing. Your game will be delivered as a Steam key and is compatible with PC or Mac. For those unlucky enough to have not played The Darkness 2 when it launched, the game tells the story of Jackie Estacado, head of a brutal New York crime syndicate who also happens to be host to a ruthless demonic force known only as The Darkness. This means that in addition to battling rival mob bosses and his own personal struggles, he also has to quite literally battle for control of his own body. Read more…

• Tina’s Top Ten Games Of 2012 - 4 January 2013

Last year was supposed to be the year I got a beast of a PC set up in my tiny apartment. It didn't end up being that year. 2013 will be, though, PC gods willing. So even though I missed out on games that looked right up my alley—like Hotline Miami or Natural Selection 2 (which I've actually played a little bit of and loved)—I still found plenty to play that kept me more than happily occupied. These are my favorite games of 2012, in no particular order. Borderlands 2 The game with psychotic personalities and more weapons than I could ever dream of. I loved the first Borderlands . It was the perfect cooperative game. Borderlands 2 took everything that first title made great —loot and silliness—and added even better writing, better characters, and more creative weapons . And on top of all that, Gearbox has been busting their butts to deliver us timely DLC that keeps…

First-person shooter The Darkness II is out in the US, and tomorrow in the UK, and I’ve played it through to the gruesome end. Past the gruesome beginning, via the gruesome middle. How does all that grue hold up? Well, wipe away the lung and take a seat, and I’ll tell you Wot I Think. (more…)

• The Darkness II: The Kotaku Review - 8 February 2012

The first Darkness game was released in 2007. With some original ideas for the genre and a setting that wasn't space or a war, it was a surprise hit, and people still say nice things about it today. The second Darkness game was released in 2012. It's...well...yes. While The Darkness was developed by Starbreeze, who are now putting the finishing touches on the new Syndicate, this game is the work of Digital Extremes, a studio normally responsible for platform-porting other 2K studios' titles. So there are changes. The game feels a bit less serious this time around, for example, the cel-shaded graphics giving things a more pulpy look. There's also some other stuff that's changed. Let's see how much for the better. WHAT I LIKED Slice & Dice . Four-armed combat is still as fun as ever. The Darkness II will give you, at least initially, that same giddy rush you get from shooters like Halo an…

• The Darkness II Weathers the Hellish Attentions of Game Reviewers - 7 February 2012

There are plenty of things you can do with a tentacle besides porn, and The Darkness II has them all covered. Jackie Estacado has gone through hell; now he faces an even greater challenge: Critics. There's something living inside mobster Jackie Estacado, born of the blackest corners of the psyche, eons of human suffering and strife, and not a little high-cost hair product. He's the host for The Darkness, an ancient and powerful entity that thrives on chaos and destruction. This comic book anti-hero's first journey to the video game market resulted in a solid shooter with a surprising amount of heart (in more ways than one). The question is did he leave enough hearts for seconds? For the answer we turn to that most heartless of uber-entities, the assembled video game critics. Eurogamer An extra pair of limbs is so useful in an FPS, and so much fun, that it's a wonder we haven't seen more…
