- Answers to questions about the last patch and loss of save data - 12 February 2023
Hey everyone, Just wanted to follow up on a couple of questions that have been popping up since the last patch was released and then rolled back. On the topic of what the patch was for, it was a small number of UI and controls updates to improve the user experience on SteamDeck. On the subject of save data, it's currently unclear exactly how that broke the backwards compatibility for saves, but we will investigate and update you all once we know. However, the error message does not mean that you lost your save game, only that the patched version was unable to read the file. After the rollback to the old version of the game, your save data should be recovered. Also, we want to apologise for the hijinks this patch caused and also the lack of patch notes at the time of release. We will, in future, make sure to share patch notes, so you know what the patch is addressing for any future patch…

"It's grim up north," it's said in the UK - often sardonically by northerners. They don't know the half of it. We're north of north now, where the hills are high and craggy - a reflection of the people that live between them, constantly bracing for outside intrusion. The pines are tall and spiky, just like the pikes we've fashioned from their branches. I'm grateful for these natural defences against the oncoming assault. We stand on the beaches, sharp sticks pointed outwards, ready to poke the invaders back into the cold seas. Or failing that, make enough holes in them that they stop climbing. Discordant horns jeer from the horizon, or at least where the horizon ought to be - the fog is so thick that we can hear our enemy before we see them. I loved Bad North back when I reviewed it. It's a doomy game about fighting off invading forces, set on a chilly archipelago strung across the edge of the world. It's one of those games where brilliantly simple mechanics - three kinds of units, very straightforward victory and loss conditions for each scrappy battle - are married to rich atmospheric details. The seas here are glassy and still, each island a bleached eruption of cold earth. You feel the cold, the wind, and you get a sense of how tenacious life must be to get by here. And then the invaders arrive, masked and silent in their black ships which ghost in without sails to propel them. There is a horrible inevitability to their advancing, something of a bad dream to it.
