- Studio behind one of 2023's most thought-provoking games has laid off over half their staff - 27 June 2023
Scavengers Studio have laid off more than half their staff after photography-biking adventure Season: A Letter To The Future failed to meet commercial expectations. In an email to employees shared with GamesIndustry.biz , CEO Amélie Lamarche said “the game only sold 60,000 copies during its first five months, which falls far short of what the studio needs to survive.” Lamarche notes that discounts, critical praise, and game updates didn’t move the needle, and now only 16 employees are left at the studio after downsizing. - The developers of one of PlayStation’s best exclusives faces massive layoffs - 27 June 2023
Scavengers Studio, the Montreal-based developer behind Season and Darwin Project, is laying off over half of its employees following low sales on its latest game. Season, an indie darling and one of PlayStation's best exclusives in recent years, appears to have sold less than 60,000 copies according to French journalist Gauthier Andres . This was in spite of numerous trailers and critical acclaim for Season , a game that seems to have been a massive hit among a small crowd. In an update provided to Gamesindustry.biz , the developer shared the internal announcement sent around the studio by CEO Amélie Lamarche last week. It states: "While Season received critical acclaim, it did not meet our commercial expectations." The statement then confirms initial reporting from Andres: "Despite our efforts to boost sales through content updates and discounts, the game only sold 60,000 copies during…

Due to numerous requests, players will now also be able to view their journal after the game’s ending! - Season: A Letter to the Future review - 3 February 2023
There's nothing I love more than a game world that wants to tell me a story, but it's rare that I'm the one asked to do the telling. Season: A Letter To The Future has a vast horizon when it starts, painting a fascinating post-apocalyptic-ish setting where the player is tasked with documenting what they find. Yet the more I travel through Season, the more its vista shrinks, taken up instead by the story its narrator wants to tell and leaving no room for my own exploration... Read more.

- Season: A Letter To The Future review: a melancholy travelogue of a gorgeous post-war world - 26 January 2023
Season: A Letter To The Future begins with a goodbye. You wander around your home for the last time, choosing five objects which inspire deep memories that spur each of the five senses. You then place them into a cauldron one by one, your mother keeping a watchful eye. The ritual comes to an end and the result is a small glowing pendant that will protect you from the dangers of the outside world. “You must promise me never to take the pendant off,” your mother says. The Goodbye ritual is finished, and you leave, knowing you’ll never see your mother or your hometown ever again, all as the prophecy foretold. It’s a fantastic - if sad - start to Season, and gets straight to the heart of the adventure ahead of you. This is a world where prayers, rituals, and prophecies hold great weight, and where you'll be exploring the fragility and fickleness of memory. Underpinning everythin…

SEASON is a quest to discover a new world; one unknown yet familiar. Document, photograph, and record life as you find it, while you still can. The gameplay of SEASON: A letter to the future focuses on exploring, recording, meeting others, and unraveling the strange world around you. At any point, you can hop off your bike and equip a recording tool from your bag. Each captures a different element; sounds and music, art and architecture, voices of old people, vanishing religious practices, the traces of seasons long past. Your tools help you examine the world more closely until you’re able to grasp the culture, history, and ecology underneath everything.

Caption: Season: a letter to the future Questions with Megan! 1. Let’s start off with one that lots of folks get wrong, what exactly does a Narrative Designer do? On Season, the narrative designers do story integration into gameplay mechanics. That is a bit of a wide net that I’ve cast there, but it is easiest to think of narrative designers as the bridge between game designers and writers. We…

In this month’s instalment, we will be sharing a deep dive with Level Designer Oli Reeves about what goes into making a world fit for players to discover. Caption: Season Questions with Oli! 1. What considerations do you need to make as a level designer to keep things unique to Season’s Art style? In regards to Season’s art style and my approach to level design, two elements came to mind regarding our aesthetic: lighting and composition. Given that the art direction is driven by a variation of toon shading, we have only two nuances of lighting: shadow and light. This also affects the…
