- Semblance review - a wibbly, wobbly platformer that turns the genre upside down - 6 August 2018
Before there were fidget spinners, there were stress balls. You remember them, right? Those squishy, malleable balls of goo that could be squeezed and pulled and manipulated in a myriad of eye-watering ways, ostensibly to help people channel their frustration and anger, but only ever really used to sedate restless hands for a day or two before being shoved, forgotten, into a desk drawer. In Semblance you play as one of those squishy, malleable balls of goo that leaps and squeezes and wiggles, collecting orbs to reverse the thin layer of infectious crust that's creeping across your soft, moldable world. A press release calls it an "engaging, yet minimalist story" but I don't quite truck with that, because I didn't even realise there was a story, not until I'd finished the game and sat down to write this review. That's not a criticism, though; at its heart Semblance is a puzzle game, and…
- What it's like to launch an indie game in 2018, hour-by-hour - 27 July 2018
Thumbnail image via Cukia "Sugar" Kimani I first met Ben Myres at PAX East 2017, when he spotted my press pass from across the hall, cut off my path, and quickly escorted me to the his single-monitor setup in one of those austere Indie Megabooth slots. That was the first time I played Semblance , which was then a thesis project Myres and his partner Cukia "Sugar" Kimani worked on together as students at South Africa's University of Witwatersrand. You play as a magenta blob in a Seussian landscape who has the power to deform the geometry around you by jumping into it headfirst—like a Mario who didn't live in a purely right-angled world. It brought to mind puzzle platformers like World of Goo and Fez. They were looking for a publisher to finance it. A year later I'm across the street from the LA Convention Center at Good Shepherd Entertainment's E3 showcase, whe…

Semblance is Now Available on Steam and is 10% off!* Semblance is an innovative platformer with deformable terrain, set in a beautiful minimalist world. Semblance takes the idea of a ‘platform’ in a platformer and turns it on its head. *Offer ends July 31 at 10AM Pacific Time
- Malleable platformer Semblance squidges out July 24th - 5 July 2018
I don’t want to sully the wonderfully malleable world of Semblance with vulgarity, as tempting as this next line makes it to. Semblance is a platformer that invites you to “explore a world where the default is soft, where the property of ‘hardness’ doesn’t exist” – not in your body, nor the platforms you jump upon. It’s part puzzler and part jumper, where the latter can only happen once you’ve squidged the world into the right shape. It comes out July 24th, and the trailer below demonstrates the big idea wonderfully. (more…)

There's a further taste of how that works in the new release date trailer below. ORIGINAL STORY 7/3/2018: Developer Nyamakop has announced that its wonderful-looking "playdough platformer" Semblance will be heading to Switch and PC later this year. Read more…
- Squish levels until they work in playdough puzzle-platformer Semblance - 2 April 2018
Semblance is a pretty puzzle-platformer where your character—an adorable blobby thing named Squish—and everything else is made of soft, squishable dough. Well, everything except for the parts of the world that have been infected by horrible crystals that feed off the world's softness. Anyone who played with playdough as a kid can tell you that nothing kills the fun like hard, dry dough, to say nothing of horrible crystals, which is why ol' Squish needs to save the day by solving some inventive puzzles.  This beautiful, moldable world is Semblance's central and most intriguing idea. By ramming and pounding soft platforms, Squish can literally shape the world around him, raising and contorting platforms to fit the situation. You can force dough upward to block a harmful laser or create a bridge above some deadly crystals, or stretch a platform out like a…
- Semblance, a puzzle platformer about bending the rules - 8 March 2018
We’ve all done it. You miss a jump by what feels like millimeters (you were probably miles off, admit it), and your first thought is ‘If only that platform were just a little bit higher’. If you could, at that moment, you’d reach out and bend the rules, just a teensy bit. Make it that little bit closer, or your jump just a little higher. Semblance is an upcoming puzzle-platformer all about literally bending the rules, or at least the level. Use your head (and by which I mean ram it into things) to bend the level geometry, or even reshape your own body to open new paths. Come in and see the trailer, which should give you a better idea what to expect. (more…)
