• Staving off exhaustion in The Quiet Sleep is too exhausting - 28 November 2019

  Your first goal in The Quiet Sleep is to wake up. You do this by connecting that goal to a willpower mine, which is itself linked to an energy spring via a train of thought. This is very confusing, especially if you’re attempting to understand how this works while frazzled on a Friday afternoon. That confusion isn’t ideal in a game that deliberately hides its true nature. This exacerbates the way you’re meant to feel overwhelmed, like you’re struggling to hold your life together, because that’s exactly what’s happening to your character. That’s sort of a neat idea, except in practice my hour with The Quiet Sleep has left me more exasperated than intrigued. (more…)

  Brains are squishy, veiny gobbets of flesh filled with squabbling ideas, desires and feelings. They aren t pretty. And nor is The Quiet Sleep, to be frank. But look past this strategic-narrative game s programmer-art visuals and you ll find a life playing out among its icons. And within that life lies a story told through the systems of a game that somehow successfully blends The Settlers with The Sims, via the Zacklike , tower defence, and a touch of Fallen London.   Hey, I fixed an issue that caused the game to crash if you lost your job. Now, the game continues to run. You will still be unemployed however. Thanks to the people who found that issue, both for the bug reports and for getting that far with the game!

• Cleaner Communication of Systems - 27 December 2017

  I recently watched a few more people play The Quiet Sleep and I put in a few small changes to fix issues that these playtesters ran into. I've added the following things: Highlight for the goals menu when there are new goals. Links to goals from the chapter menu. Better indicators for constructions. Indicator for when no focus is being used. Cleaner train menu. Indicator for when a tower runs out of charges and a better explanation of how to recharge. Better indicator of if a building is currently in use.

  I just put in a full tutorial for the first stage of the game. Getting familiar with the systems of the game proved more difficult for new players than I anticipated and so it seemed reasonable to help people get started.

• Difficulty Settings - 20 November 2017

  You can now change the difficulty of The Quiet Sleep in the settings panel. I also put in a couple of small features to make it easier to start playing the game and removed the thing that made constructions be deleted if they weren't being built because it was weird for new players.

Additionally: Currencies no longer die at the end of the day. More sound options. The game pauses automatically when you set up a train of thought. Emotions animate on death. Better communication of damage. Multiple minor bugfixes.
