• Getting physical with Virtual Realms - 4 July 2021

  In a dark room encircled by a 360-degree screen, Patrick Moran methodically leaps through a series of blue spotlights on the floor. The Barbican curator is showing me an internal cheat code to speed through a section of Book of Sand, a specially-commissioned work named for the Jorge Luis Borges short story about a book with infinite pages. The meditative scenes projected around us are from Tequila Works' 2017 puzzler RiME, reincarnated in a new form here at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore. Book of Sand is one of six new installations at Virtual Realms, an exhibition co-curated by the Barbican and Sega alumnus Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who adapted elements of his own game Rez into a new piece for the show. Six game developers were paired with shortlisted media artists to create what Mizuguchi terms an "experiential new artform" for collaborative group play; onedotzero's Shane Walter jokingly…

• This year's BAFTA Fellowship goes to... - 22 March 2021

  Media Molecule boss Siobhan Reddy will collect the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship award this year. Announcing the award today, BAFTA said it had honoured Reddy "in recognition of her pioneering work on advocacy for diversity, inclusion and creative and collaborative working culture". Reddy joined Media Molecule shortly after its founding in 2006, and has served as its studio director since 2009, following the successful launch of LittleBigPlanet on PlayStation 3. The following years saw various LittleBigPlanet sequels and spin-offs, plus Vita and PS4 game Tearaway, before the long-awaited Dreams arrived in 2020. Read more

• Sony says expect more of its first-party PlayStation games on PC - 30 August 2020

  Sony has said it'll continue to release first-party PlayStation games on PC. In its 2020 corporate report , Sony talked about the future of PlayStation and of course the upcoming release of PlayStation 5. Buried within the generic, non-committal notes is a single nugget: the confirmation Sony will release more of its games on PC. PlayStation has largely ignored PC, instead focusing on creating exclusives for its consoles. While its marketing for PS5 has reinforced the idea of console exclusives, Sony has begun to dabble with putting its PlayStation games on PC, with the release of PS4 exclusive Horizon Zero Dawn on Steam in August 2020. • Cyberpunk 2077 PSone demake takes the old-school GTA route - 11 January 2020

  Cyberpunk 2077 is probably the most-anticipated video game in the world right now - and so it seems only right it should have a PSone demake already. Cyberpunk 1997 is a fun reimagining of CD Projekt's upcoming behemoth by prolific demaker Bearly Regal - and it was made in Media Molecule's PlayStation 4 creation game Dreams. Bearly Regal's Dreams creation apes Cyberpunk 2077's official gameplay video from August 2018 by starting off in the player character's apartment. This first-person section lets you move about the room, checking out some appliances and picking up a gun. Read more
