• Capcom confirms a live-action Mega Man movie is on the way - 6 October 2018

  Capcom has confirmed plans to make a live-action Mega Man movie. The film—tentatively entitled Mega Man—will be written and directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, and is scheduled to be produced by Chernin Entertainment and Masi Oka, who some of you may remember portrayed Hiro in "save the cheerleader, save the world" superpower series, Heroes.  "Based on the influential and globally beloved Mega Man franchise, Capcom aims to appeal to a diverse audience, including not only game players but action movie fans as well, with an adaptation that maintains the world of the Mega Man games, while incorporating the grand production and entertainment value that Hollywood movies are known for," Capcom says in its press release .  The timing of this announcement just so happens to coincide with the release of Mega Man 11, which hit PC on October 2 and is currently recei…

• Mega Man's getting a live-action Hollywood film, which nobody asked for - 4 October 2018

  Yes, you read the headline right. Capcom has announced that Mega Man is being adapted into a live-action Hollywood film for the first time (and maybe the last). To mark Mega Man's 30th anniversary, Capcom believes a live-action film will "energise the brand further" and has given it the working title "MEGA MAN" in all-caps because it's obviously going to be ACTION packed. The film's going to be directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the folks that brought you horror films like Paranormal Activity 3 and 4. If this is anything to go by, Capcom could end up showing a darker, grittier side of Mega Man to fans - his Mega Buster cannon tearing enemies to shreds, quiet scenes in the local android cafe where Mega Man sits with his mate Proto Man and seriously questions his entire existence dedicated to fighting robots - this sort of thing.   Mega Man games have never been the friendliest. The series is built around complex pattern recognition and frame perfect platforming. It's a strict school of game design that's since migrated to roguelikes, where failure is tempered somewhat by surprising systems and remixed levels. It makes the idea of a new Mega Man game feel a bit out of place in 2018. Mega Man 11, releasing October 2, is the first in the series since 2010. At first glance it looks just as tough as the 10 games that preceded it, and it is.   The real tragedy of Mega Man is that Capcom haven’t followed Street Fighter’s naming conventions with their vintage platformer series. We could’ve had Mega Man, then Hyper Man, Super Hyper Man, then… and today I could be talking to you about Totally Tubular Bodacious Radical Man rather than just plain ol’ ‘ Mega Man 11 ‘.
