- Epic reveals next week's free game - 24 June 2021
It's Thursday, and you know what that means - another round of free PC games from the Epic Games Store. This week, you can grab some retro-style action with Sonic Mania and Horizon Chase Turbo , and as ever, Epic has revealed next week's freebie, too. It's time to get into a narrative-driven, first-person puzzler with The Spectrum Retreat. You'll be able to grab The Spectrum Retreat from the usual Epic Games Store promotion page on Thursday, July 1 at 8am PDT / 11am EDT / 4pm BST. It'll be there for one full week, at which point it'll be replaced by another freebie. As always, you'll 'purchase' the game at a price of zero dollars, and it'll remain in your library just like any game you might pay money for. Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. What s this? The Spectrum Retreat ? Another puzzle game chosen by Alice L? She would never, she s not that predictable! Well, wait. If the slendermenesque robots aren t enough to hook you, then how about knowing it was created by one guy, for five years, and he started it when he was 15. How impressive is that? It also won the BAFTA Young Game Designer Game Making Award (ages 15-18). I don t know about you but I have never won a BAFTA, never mind winning one between the ages of 15 and 18. (more…)

The Spectrum Retreat is a game that really wants to be the new Portal , and I can respect that. It s good to be ambitious. But raw ideas matter less than their implementation, and when it comes to execution, The Spectrum Retreat doesn t quite manage to reach the level of polish and elegance it aspires to. (more…)

First-person puzzle games with vague Portal inspirations are common enough, but The Spectrum Retreat looks to be an especially polished and stylish take on the sub-genre. Thematically, it’s about escaping from a creepy sci-fi hotel staffed by faceless robots with the aid of a mysterious benefactor on the phone. - BAFTA s Young Game Designers suggest a bright future for games - 11 May 2018
I’m in awe of people who manage to turn their free time to productive ends. While I’m Netflix binging or chain Doting, I know others are writing novels or screenplays, filming videos or channelling their artistic talents in any number of ways. That’s why I’m especially in awe of Emily Mitchell and Daniel Smith, who both won the Young Game Designers competition when they were 18. Dan picked up the award in 2016 with Spectrum, a Portal-esque first-person puzzler about escaping from a creepy hotel. Emily won last year with Fractured Minds, a series of vignettes exploring mental health issues. Neither game betrays the age of its creator, and both could be on their way to becoming big names.
