- SolSeraph descends from the heavens but may not have stuck the landing - 15 July 2019
It got a little lost in last week’s flurry of activity, but SolSeraph — ACE Team’s tribute to genre-blending SNES gem ActRaiser — is out, though sadly not heralded by a celestial chorus. Staying close to its inspirations, it’s half hack n’ slash platformer, half real-time strategy about a god reclaiming their land from monsters and demons in the name of their human followers. I’ve not had a chance to play it for myself, but trusted ActRaiser fans and platformer aficionados alike haven’t had much good to say. Perhaps it just wasn’t weird enough for ACE Team? - SolSeraph review - God on a bit of a budget - 15 July 2019
In action, how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god. This is handy. In SolSeraph, you play a sort of blend of an angel and a god, as far as I can tell. You have wings and armour and a sword, but you can also inspire people, make the land fertile and cast lightning at your enemies. You're pretty swish, in other words, but then you land and a spider will dangle from above and hurt you, and then you'll step in some brambles. Ouch. SolSeraph is a spiritual successor to ActRaiser, and ActRaiser was really, really interesting. You were a god in ActRaiser and you lead your people. Sometimes you wandered around side-scrolling bits sticking it to baddies. Sometimes you flew over a map encouraging your people to build towns and roads and to seal evil-doers away for good. Ace Team, the loons behind Zeno Clash and Rock Of Ages , have just announced their secret project and it’s just weeks away. Out on July 10th, SolSeraph is a hybrid platformer and tower defence RTS that they call “a homage to some inspiring titles from the 16 bit era”. I’d guess that’s a lawyer-dodging way of saying that they’ve gone and made a spiritual successor to SNES gem ActRaiser , right down to copying the title’s capitalisation. As a fan of both the studio and ActRaiser, I am extremely excited. Take a look at the announcement trailer below. (more…)
