Hey everyone! It's been quite the week hasn't it? We announced Super Yooka-Laylee Kart at Summer Games Fest as part of Day of the Dev's, and we've seen the incredible amount of love and support from our community since then. - Tencent buys stake in Yooka-Laylee studio Playtonic - 18 November 2021
Chinese tech conglomerate Tencent has bought a minority stake in Playtonic, the Derby-based developer behind Yooka-Laylee. Playtonic has not disclosed how much of the company it had sold, but confirmed it still retained ownership of its IP. The money will be spent on scaling up the business from its current single-team structure to multiple teams, hiring diverse talent, improving its office and exploring an expansion to other locations, Playtonic said. Playtonic Games, the studio behind Kickstarter success Yooka-Laylee, has announced a new publishing label. It's called Playtonic Friends, and three studios have already signed up their next projects. At the same time, and after a quiet 2020, Playtonic is reassuring fans it remains committed to its own game development. Playtonic now has "multiple" games featuring Yooka-Laylee characters in the works and is staffing up further to expand its production capabilities. We've spoken to Playtonic boss Gavin Price about these new announcements and its upcoming games - you can read all that below. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair has just received an update! We also begin the celebrations of the third year anniversary of the original Yooka-Laylee with an update for it coming soon! Here are all of the changes: Yooka-Laylee and The Impossible Lair Weāve made some changes to the Lair itself, as it could feel, wellā¦ quite impossible. With this update we want to offer more options for taking on the Impossible Lair whilst still keeping the sense of challenge and achievement. Impossible Lair āState Changeā Simply flip the switch on the difficulty to choose which version of the lair you want to tackle! Not So Impossible Lair Each section now ends with a checkpoint. These checkpoints save your best 'Bee Shield score,' meaning you can choose which sections to start from, practice and improve on! Using these checkpoints is entirely optional. As you may have heard, a free demo for Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is now available right here on Steam! Weāve also patched in a bunch of bug fixes and added the functionality for demo saves to carry over to the full game. If youāre insect inclined, feast your eyes on the wall of bug fixes below ā donāt worry, no Beettalion were harmed in the process! Changes ā¢ Billboard tutorial signs added to Tutorial and Capital Causeway levels. Fixes General: ā¢ Fixed V-sync issue which changed the behaviour of some physical objects. ā¢ Removed jitter from some 2D objects in 2D levels ā¢ Multiple localisation fixes ā¢ SFX for Quack Bomb explosion & Gun Senior death explosion no longer disregards volume settings from the Pause Menu. Playtonic's rather fab Yooka-Laylee sequel, the Impossible Lair, will soon be getting a demo on PC, PlayStation 4, and Switch - meaning those still on the fence can finally try before they buy. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, which launched toward the end of last year, sees the titular lizard and bat duo mixing things up for outing number two. While the first, rather uneven , game in the series saw Playtonic riffing on developer Rare's beloved Banjo-Kazooie games, its sequel swaps fully 3D platforming for predominantly side-scrolling action. The most obvious touchstone this time around is Donkey Kong Country - specifically, Retro Studios' two critically acclaimed outings - and the end result is a follow-up that feels tighter, more enjoyable, and supremely more assured.
