Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. The Addams Family and The Twilight Zone are just TV shows to me, not pinball tables. I’ve never had an affinity for IRL bumpers and flippers. I do, however, quite like pinball-infused video games. The absolute joy that is Yoku’s Island Express opened my eyes to what a video game could do with pinball elements, a few years back. And, in 2019, Creature In The Well did it all over again. Rather than a postbeetle-shaped ball, you’re essentially a moving flipper in this hack and slasher, tackling bumper-filled dungeons one room at a time. (more…)

- Unknown Pleasures: recovery position - 13 September 2019
It’s been a tiring week, viewers. Lying on the floor going “uuuugh” all weekend, instead of merely for most of it, was not enough to dispel the curse I placed on myself last Friday. I did not know I was still able to dance for that long and not die. So. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been particularly sedate this week. Which is lucky, because it’s been another week for Unknown Pleasures , our regular round up of the best spewings from the Steam hose that not enough people are playing. Scraping the key against the outside of the lock for the ninth time while sobbing this week: puzzling spies, pinball mountains, and pseudocatholic guilt. (more…)

One guaranteed way to jazz up pinball is by adding swords to the mix. Pinball with swords as you help out a robot pal on their dungeon-crawling quest to rid an abandoned structure of its spooky inhabitant is a stronger pitch still. Now, to the casual outsider, what we’re doing might seem absolutely nuts, but we thought we’d put together an alphabetical list of all the PC games that have been confirmed to appear at this year’s E3 show. With well over a hundred of them now in the books, the next year or so looks packed. (more…)

- Creature In The Well mixes some pinball into its dungeon crawling - 20 March 2019
During today’s Nintendo indie showcase stream, Flight School Studio had their own PC-bound weird take on the hack n’ slash dungeon crawler to announce; Creature In The Well . Part melee combat, part bullet hell, part pinball, and all stylish, thanks to a mix of comic-style shading effects that I don’t think I’ve ever seen in 3D before. Players control a sword-swinging robot as it descends into a subterranean labyrinth, defeating turret-dense security systems by deflecting bouncing bullets back into the tightly clustered defences.
