- Supposed BioShock 4 screenshot confirms that yes, it is a video game - 15 July 2024
You're not gonna believe this. An apparent screenshot from the Bioshock game that's currently in the works has leaked online, and, assuming it's genuine, it tells us one thing we've all been hoping to learn about the title. That it's a video game. Yep, take a look at the image, which MP1ST claims has been unearthed from the showreel of a visual effects artist working for publisher 2K, and you can see clear as day, Bioshock 4, reportedly codenamed 'Parkside' , is probably in line to be one of those doodads we all like to play with a controller, or mouse and keyboard, or a dance pad. In it, the player's holding a gun, dubbed the "Ricochet Shotgun", and is looking straight at some kind of glowing orb mounted on a stand. Maybe they're contemplating it for some reason, or maybe the player just happened to be pointed at a regular light when the screenshot was taken and everyone's about to get…
- Do you understand what Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is saying here about Roll7 and Intercept? Someone make it make sense - 17 May 2024
Ok, so, you remember when it looked an awful lot like Take-Two was shutting down both Kerbal Space Program 2 developer Intercept Games and Roll7 - the studio behind Rollerdrome and OlliOlli World - earlier this month? Well, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has now said that it "didn't shutter" the studios, leaving us all wondering whether they still, er, actually exist. Yes, this is a thing. If you're out of the loop, the shutterings - hinted at by internal documentation from Roll7 and a notice filed with the Washington State Employment Security Department - were reportedly part of cuts Take-Two revealed plans for via an SEC filing in April . Naturally, both people in the industry and players weren't exactly pleased to hear either bit of news, but Zelnick now seems to have cast some doubt over what's actually happening in pretty baffling fashion. In response to IGN asking during yesterday's…

- BioShock 4 gets a narrative designer who's written for Ghost of Tsushima, Watch Dogs: Legion - 11 December 2022
The next, currently untitled BioShock game has added a writer on Ghost of Tsushima as its narrative designer. "The dream is real!" wrote Liz Albl earlier this week. "So happy to announce I've joined Cloud Chamber as Narrative Lead on BioShock." Albl already has a number of writing credits under her belt, having written on games like Ghost of Tsushima, Far Cry 5, Watch Dogs: Legion, and more. It's been a while since we've heard anything about this fourth entry in the BioShock series, most of which has just been a lot of he-said, she-said rather than anything actually concrete. Back in 2020 some job listings gave us a bit of insight into what the game might be like, with a particular call for developers that have experience working on RPGs. Read more
- The best BioShock game turned 10 yesterday - 10 February 2020
It doesn’t have anything to match the first game’s memorable twist, but in all other ways BioShock 2 is the best of the three BioShock games. It returned you to the underwater city of Rapture as a prototype Big Daddy, one of the drill-handed protectors you spend the first game hunting. It had better fights, better or equally as memorable world design, and never hits any of the low lows of its predecessor or sequel. (E.g. it doesn’t end with you fighting a big blue man.) We rightly champion games which undertake the heavy work of creating something new, as the first BioShock did, but moment to moment, BioShock 2 is simply more fun. (more…)
- BioShock 4 should let you fire an albatross from your hand - 10 December 2019
What is the true hallmark of a BioShock game? According to the press release about the new 2K-founded studio Cloud Chamber, wot is making a brand new BioShock , it’s “iconic, first-person shooter gameplay”. Before Binfinite came out, original series lead Ken Levine said in an interview that it’s the “incredibly detailed world” each game lets you explore. Or maybe it’s the PoLiTiCs? BioShock, famously, includes a pretty basic critique of the wet fart that is Objectivism, causing people either to argue it was a searing work of political genius, or be furious that it wasn’t a work of searing political genius. Perhaps it’s the settings? BioShock and BioShock 2 were set in an underwater city, and Infinite was set in a floating one. I can only assume the new one will just be about a normal city. But run on centrist principles . The most dy…
- A new BioShock is being made at 2K's new studio - 9 December 2019
Pretty pop-philosophy FPS series BioShock is to return, 2K announced today, with a new game coming from a new studio. 2K don’t reveal even the name of the new game, let alone in which sort of strange city it’ll (surely?) be set, but it’s official: BioShock is back, baby. 2K have muttered about resurrecting it several times in the years since the release of BioShock Infinite and demise of creators Irrational Games, and this time it seems to be real. The new BioShock is being made by Cloud Chamber, a new studio who’ll be working on the game “for the next several years.” Don’t hold your breath. Unless you’re underwater. In which case, do. (more…)
- New BioShock game announced, still "several" years away - 9 December 2019
A new BioShock game is in the works, publisher 2K has confirmed. The project will be in development for the next "several" years, 2K said in a statement today, with development centred at the publisher's newly-named Cloud Chamber studio. Cloud Chamber is headed up by Kelley Gilmore, formerly of 2K's XCOM and Civ studio Firaxis, with offices in both San Francisco and Montreal. Read more
- The best FPS games on PC - 1 November 2019
The best shooters endure. While other genres warp beyond recognition, there is something solid about the first-person shooter that makes it as dependable as a nice big AK-47. Maybe it s the gung-ho simplicity – look down a barrel and pull the trigger. It’s as fun to fire a double-barrelled shotgun from an early 90s FPS as the slick shotties of today. For that reason, this list runs the gamut from genre classics to those released in the last year. There’s bound to be something for you in this, our list of the best 50 FPS games on PC. Let s lock and/or load. (more…)
- The impossible architecture of video games - 12 February 2019
There is a saying in architecture that no building is unbuildable, only unbuilt. Structures may be impossible in the here and now, but have the potential to exist given enough time or technological development: a futuristic cityscape, a spacefaring megastructure, the ruins of an alien civilisation. However, there are also buildings that defy the physical laws of space. It is not an issue that they could not exist, but that they should not. Their forms bend and warp in unthinkable ways; dream-like structures that push spatial logic to its breaking point. The Tomb of Porsena is a legendary monument built to house the body of an Etruscan king. 400 years after its construction, the Roman scholar Varro gave a detailed description of the ancient structure. A giant stone base rose 50 feet high, beneath it lay an "inextricable labyrinth", and atop it sat five pyramids. Above this was a brass sp…
- How a lifelong diet of games influenced The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle - 7 February 2019
"I forget everything between footsteps. "'Anna!' I finish shouting, snapping my mouth shut in surprise. "My mind has gone blank. I don't know who Anna is or why I'm calling her name. I don't even know how I got here. I'm standing in a forest, shielding my eyes from the spitting rain. My heart's thumping, I reek of sweat and my legs are shaking. I must have been running but I can't remember why. Read more…
- The 50 best FPS on PC - 21 May 2018
The best shooters endure. While the state of the art moves on in other genres and leaves old designs in the dust, it’s as fun to fire a well-made shotgun from an early 90s FPS as from one released today. For that reason, this list runs the gamut from genre classics to those released in the last year. There’s bound to be something for you inside. (more…)
- What Works And Why: Emergence - 30 January 2018
What Works And Why is a new monthly column where Gunpoint and Heat Signature designer Tom Francis digs into the design of a game and analyses what makes it good. I love Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and Dishonored 2, and the name for these games is dumb: they’re ‘immersive sims’. If you asked me what I liked about them, my answer would be a phrase almost as dumb: ’emergent gameplay!’ I always used to think of these as virtually the same thing, but of course they’re not. Immersive sims usually have a whole list of traits, things like: (more…)
- BioShock is ten years old today - 21 August 2017
BioShock is ten years old! The first-person shooter set in the underwater city of Rapture was released on August 21, 2007 in North America (and on the 24th elsewhere), and I’ve been digging through RPS’s archives for the things we wrote about the game upon its release. (more…)
- The 50 Best FPS On PC - 13 January 2017
So often the bleeding edge of games tech, yet so often fundamentally the same underneath: there’s a reason we can’t get enough of pretend shooting pretend people in their pretend faces. It is a pure test of skill and reflex, a game about movement at least as much as it is about violence, and done right it is absolutely delightful . And hey, sometimes you get a decent gimmick or story thrown into the mix. These are our favourite 50 first-person shooters on PC, from 1993-2017. Your favourite is at number 51. …
- Liquid Football: Rocket League Getting Free AquaDome - 22 September 2016
There’s always a lighthouse, there’s always a man, there’s always a GOOOOAAAALLLL! Perhaps misunderstanding the phrase “back of the net”, Rocket League developers Psyonix have announced an oceanic haul for their bumper-to-ball sports ’em up. Next month will bring a free carfootie pitch set in a BioShock-ish undersea sportworld, named AquaDome. I always thought Andrew Ryan was more into golf (or golf was in him) but here we go. Two submersible-ish cars are coming as paid DLC too. …
- Would You Adam & Eve It: BioShock Remastered Fixes - 20 September 2016
BioShock: The Collection on PC is good-lookin’ but, it’s fair to say, A Bit Dicky , pulling off the impressively bungled trick of both recreating some of BioShock’s original issues and throwing a clutch of new ones into the mix too. Take yer pick from enforced mouse-smoothing, no 5.1 sound, messed-up 21:9 support, limited FOV, no graphics settings outside of antialiasing, anistropic filtering, resolution, vysnc and a clutch of crashes. Many of these, though not the crashes, can be resolved via ini file editing (a guide to that is here ), but in this, the third consecutive Year Of Luigi, we should not be expected to dirty our hands so. The good news is that 2K are planning to grab a five-iron and bludgeon most of the major problems into submission. The bad news is that it doesn’t look like we can expect a full settings menu any time soon. …
- RPS Verdict: The BioShock Trilogy - 16 September 2016
Almost ten years after our first trip to Rapture, the BioShock trilogy has been re-released and (in some cases) remastered. The Collection looks lovely but it’s far from perfect . Today, we’re looking back though – a lot has happened since the first game s arrival, including the departure of director Ken Levine from the studio that made two of the three games, and a resurgence of the first-person immersive sim as a genre. Here, we consider all things Bioshock and decide, among other things, which of the games is actually the best. …
