  • Update 1.6.7 - Foliage fixes - 2 October 2026

Hello Beautiful People.Update 1.6.7 mainly focuses on the creation of a new foliage tool, performance and scalability settings. This patch mainly fixes game breaking bugs and lays the groundwork for future optimisations.FoliageThe creation of a custom tool was needed to fix several issues caused at the engine level. Issues that exist in every version of Ue5. Issues like invisible collisions being left behind on lower scalability settings and incorrectly scaled mega foliage. The new foliage system comes with one notable trade-off. In exchange for more reliable scalability culling, culling will now occur at runtime (during gameplay) instead of before the player loads in.PerformanceI created a new material pipeline. This was done to better align with modern hardware and graphics cards. To reduce and stabilise frame time. However, only 11% of the materials have been converted to the new syst…

Hello beautiful peopleI’m pleased to announce the release of Build 1.6.6. This update brings some major changes. The biggest change being that the game is no longer called Outback. From this update onward, the project will be known as Walkabout.Performance & DLSSThis update includes significant performance improvements. The game now supports DLSS Super Resolution, NIS, and DLSS Frame Generation. Frame Generation is not optional. It is now a requirement for play. The main menu includes logic that prevents unsupported hardware from playing the game, and the text beneath the title will explain whether your system is unsupported or simply needs Frame Generation enabled.DLSS settings now use conditional visibility. Options only appear once the features they depend on are enabled.Support for AMD hardware and FSR Frame Generation will be added once I’m able to acquire an AMD machine for develo…

  • Update 1.6.4 - 14 March 2023

Update 1.6.4 is now live Hello beautiful people.I hope everyone is safe and doing well. This update was focused on increasing the size of the terrain and making everything look nicer. The map has been completely rebuilt. The overall terrain is now 10 times larger than before. However, the playable area remains roughly the same. This change was needed to allow more room for places to explore as the game develops further. An example of this is how Hobart now has more houses than the entire game in the previous build. Also a lot of the models have been remade and the lighting has been adjusted to improve the look of the game. There are two important side notes to mention. The first is that your previous saves will not work in the current build. You will need to delete them to be able to play. The second is that the new build is aimed at higher end hardware then previously. You will need to…

Performance was another focus point. And adding small amounts of polish to a lot of different areas was another point of focus. For this patch, I was able to get the game running a lot better and using a reduced amount of resources. As a result, I was able to lower the minimum requirements for the game. Also install size was reduced significantly. I reached out to get some help from some other developers on the performance stuff in the shape of different ideas to try and would like to give a shout out to; Matt, Pat, High five, James and Matt W. Some notes for this patch; old saves won’t work. It is recommended that people play either using Vsync or frame capping (It uses less GPU). Let’s jump into the patch notes. --Pat…
