  • Priceless Play the pick of the Itch Bundle For Racial Justice And Equality - 13 June 2020

If you exist in almost any corner of the internet which serves the intersection of video games and social justice, you’ve likely seen the Bundle For Racial Justice and Equality from the good folks over at itch.io. The bundle has been, by all accounts, an overwhelming success. I got to watch the donation amount tick over the million-dollar mark, then the two million-dollar mark, and now, the five million-dollar mark. I think this bundle might be the greatest bundle in the history of bundles, even if you’re only going off the sheer number of games you get for your money. Here I will recommend some of my favourites. “But Kat,” you are saying. “Your column is about free games and in order to claim the bundle I’d have to pay real human money?” Great point, straw-friend. This is where, for the first time in my life, mathematics comes into play. $5USD…

  • Patch 1.0.2 - 10 January 2019

It's been a while, but a few people have brought some issues to my attention that I wanted to address quickly. New option on pause menu: Inverted mouse look Bug & performance fixes: Performance with a large number of plants present has been improved Load times improved significantly. This should also solve the issue several people ran into where you could not load the game if the plants exceeded a certain number. Maximum number of plants that can be spawned while the game isn't running has been capped at 50 to prevent islands being totally overrun. Unfortunately I have still been unable to solve the bug where flower picking clicks occasionally do not register. It's been a bear. :(

  • Unknown Pleasures: Species of Eight - 12 October 2018

It’s another transitional time, view-chums, when the students are settling, the returning TV dramas are nervously eyeing up various sharks, and I must decide which of my first ever batch of plants must be sacrificed to the ice gods. Will it be Younas, the defiant mortar tomato? Surely it couldn’t be Wilfred, producer of the Great Unexpected October Chilli? Oh, the terrible burden of choice! Fortunately, the demands of the column have prepared me, and in fact this time we’re having not five, not ten, but eight of the best overlooked games on Steam. Nobody tells Unknown Pleasures what to do. Except Graham. And Alice. And sometimes Brendy. And the magistrate that one time. Making a noble sacrifice this week: Genetic meddling, smooth transitions, and Wooian manshoots. (more…)

  • Patch 1.0.1 - 18 September 2018

Mendel's first patch should be up and working for Mac and PC users. Just a few bug fixes and changes to mutation rates. Mutation values have been adjusted: Plants will mutate slightly more frequently Flower size changes and stem width changes have been reduced to be somewhat less extreme Bug fixes: Restarting game now works correctly Text appears in front of plants in the family tree

  • Mendel is a week old! - 15 September 2018

It's been a week since I released Mendel and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that has bought, played, and reviewed the game. It's an amazing feeling to finally have this thing I've been working on for so long out in the world. Also, thank you to everyone that has sent me feedback as well as bugs they've found. I've been busy (making this game is something I do in my spare time) but I've had enough time to take care of most of them. Expect the first patch addressing at least some of the issues on Monday.

  • Unwind this weekend with soothing alien gardening sim Mendel - 7 September 2018

As a terribly impatient and inattentive man, gardening perhaps isn’t the pastime for me, but I can see myself playing more of Mendel over the weekend. It’s a quiet, abstract sandbox about growing flowers in an alien landscape. You explore small islands rich with extraterrestrial flora, take cuttings and combine them into new and interesting plants which grow to full size in seconds. Not normally my jam, but this article is going up late because I decided to give it a quick try and lost most of an hour to my small virtual flowerbed. Take a peek at it in (gently swaying) motion below. (more…)
