In order to keep the original Company of Heroes online we had to move from the servers that the game was launched on, to a new setup on Valve's Steamworks servers. While we were glad that we were able to keep the original game online, the move meant that we lost a number of features that we had managed to build into the game over the years. Since the move we have been working hard alongside the team at Smoking Gun Interactive, a Vancouver based studio featuring many of the original team that worked on CoH , to restore the game's features. Earlier this month we ran an open beta for players to test the latest version of the game. Now thanks to the beta testers' feedback we have launched the latest update to Company of Heroes . On May 7th the Company of Heroes’ online servers at server hosting company Quazal was shut down. We are very excited that we have been able to keep the game alive by transitioning to Valve’s Steamworks servers where the game will live well into the future. After nearly seven years of being bombed and battered, Company of Heroes' online infrastructure is in need of a break. Servers located at the game's old hosting company - the now Ubisoft-owned Quazal - are due to be shut down on May 7th. Is this the end of the war? Not quite. Replacement Steamworks servers have already been parachuted in, giving fans the chance to migrate over before the original host's honourable discharge. If you own the game on Steam, you'll already have the new version, the aptly titled "Company of Heroes (New Steam Version)", in your Library. It's a single launch option - so any expansions have been rolled into the DLC tab of the listing's properties menu. THQ is no more: the bankrupt publisher and developer auctioned off its assets in U.S. Bankruptcy Court today. Though the court must still approve the sales, a letter from THQ's CEO (which was passed to Kotaku by an employee) reveals the bidders, which include Sega, Ubisoft, Deep Silver, Crytek, and Take-Two, and the THQ franchises and studios they'll acquire. Below is a breakdown of who's getting what, and what led to today's sale. Who's getting what? Based on what we know right now... The Company of Heroes 2 singleplayer campaign will focus on the Soviets, but in multiplayer we'll also get to command the Wermacht, who have received some significant updates since Company of Heroes 1. The multiplayer alpha is imminent, which means lucky invitees will get more time to figure out some of the quirks of the new asymmetrical multiplayer set-up. In Company of Heroes 1, the US had a slight advantage in the early game, which gradually tilted as both armies built up their bases. Relic say they want to keep both sides even at all phases of battle to encourage closer contests. Whatever happens, millions of tanks will die gloriously.

- Company of Heroes, Saints Row: The Third in latest Humble Bundle - 29 November 2012
In what seems to be an odd move, Humble Bundle has teamed with publisher THQ to offer seven PC games in its traditional pay-what-you-want packs. It marks the first time Humble has bundled games from a large publisher, while packaging Windows-only games and using the Steam DRM. The package of games , which will be unlocked with Steam codes, includes Darksiders, Red Faction: Armageddon, Metro 2033, Company of Heroes and two CoH stand-alone expansions, Opposing Fronts and Tales of Valor. If you beat the average donation, you'll get Saints Row: The Third as a bonus. The move is unusual as it goes against Humble's traditional indie games and anti-DRM stance. As for THQ, the cash-strapped publisher is apparently looking for money any way it can to survive. The company is already looking for buyers, and big games like Metro: Last Light and Company of Heroes 2 have been delayed .

Company of Heroes 2's wintry setting isn't just there to look pretty. If you're not careful it'll freeze your soldiers to death. Relic's new Essence Engine introduces ColdTech, which simulates the effects of -40 degree environments on your soldiers, turning grim reality into a game mechanic, as Relic explain: "On winter maps, Infantry units exposed to the bitter cold will gradually freeze to death unless the player keeps them warm by building fires and garrisoning them in buildings. Dynamic blizzards will increase the effects of extreme cold making it even more hazardous to leave infantry in the open." As well as snowstorms, your troops will have to content with stretches of ice that can crack and swallow units and entire tanks whole. As the great philosopher Alfred From Batman once said, "some men just want to watch the world burn," it may not have been entirely clear from that scene, but he was referring to engineers from Company of Heroes, some of the most devastating flame troops in gaming. They start out as humble builders. They set up defences, they repair tanks, they sort out all the odd jobs that your highly trained troops won't do. Then, when you have enough fuel, you give them all flamethrowers and transform them into shock troops. Then the mildest unit in the game suddenly becomes a deadly force, the bane of any entrenched infantry unit caught unawares. It looks like they'll be making a return in Company of Heroes 2.
