• Major update is a remaster - 26 March 2019

  If you already had The Cat and the Coup in your Steam library, you might have noticed a significant update. Last year we remastered it in 4K. Everything is re-coded, the sound and music are updated, and the art/world is significantly embellished. Indeed, we released this remaster last year for $1.99, but now it's time to go back to Plan A - give it away to all as an update of the 2011 release.

  Rehearsals and Return is the new game from (primarily) Peter Brinson, creator of the remarkable art/history/politics vignette The Cat & The Coup . This shares a certain cut-up appearance and a maudlin tone (well, depending on how you approach it), but it’s a rudimentary platform game set to surrealistic, sometimes chaotic backgrounds, wherein you collect dialogue options then make decisions about how to treat assorted famous and infamous figures.   I was going to treat this as a Wot I Think, but sometimes you meet a game that just isn’t at all suited to any kind of verdict like that. There’s plenty I could probably find to moan about if I put my critic’s hat on, but what a futile endeavour that would be. The Cat And The Coup doesn’t exist to serve games’ usual purposes, although that’s not to say it’s entirely divorced from why we play them. You owe it to yourself to free up 20 minutes for this. • The Cat and the Coup: free, fun and beautiful documentary game about a CIA-funded coup - 15 June 2011

  The Cat and the Coup is a free documentary game in which you play the cat of Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran. It plays like a simple physics puzzle game, it looks like a storybook with artwork inspired by Persian miniatures, it features music by Nine Inch Nails, and if you give it just 15-minutes of your time, it'll teach you the story of a really fascinating period of American and British history involving communist paranoia and a CIA-funded coup d'état. A video, screenshots and some thoughts below. The game starts at the end of Mohammed Mossadegh's life, and you control the cat sleeping at the end of the bed.   2011 IGF Finalist The Cat and the Coup is now available for free on Steam. The Cat and the Coup is a documentary game in which you play the cat of Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran. During the summer of 1953, the CIA engineered a coup to bring about his downfall. As a player, you coax Mossadegh back through significant events of his life by knocking objects off of shelves, scattering his papers, jumping on his lap and scratching him.
