- Developer Diary: Titanic Report - 17 May 2026
Hello subROVers! Jose speaking -it's been a while since the last dev update and I thought it would be good to summarize recent progress with the game. So, without further ado, let's take a look:GAME UPDATESI've been talking to scientists from BIOS to schedule and define the work I'm going to do for the NSF grant. We are in the planning stages, but I'm going to tie in the grant with the Titanic so that we can do some interesting science in and around the wreck. I really like the idea of showing the Titanic in context as the active, evolving part of a larger environment that it has, in no small way, helped create: Titanic the lifegiver, rather than Titanic, the dying grave. The wreck is literally full of life from inside out, not unlike a whalefall, and its decay, while sad from a certain point of view, is also a magnificent display of the forces of nature at play. There's lots still to lβ¦
- Developer Diary: Cloud Saves now active - 21 December 2025
Hello subROVers! I'm Jose from retro g sqr3Lab and it's time for a news report, so grab your favorite drink and a snack and without further ado let's talk about GAME UPDATESA few days ago I published v0.7.60, a tech update addressing a security issue detected in Unity, and a few hours ago I activated Cloud saves. This should all be working smoothly, but do let me know if you have any issues.I would like to give a big thank you to Hypercat. I asked for help testing the cloud saves and they immediately volunteered and went through the whole procedure out of the kindness of their hearts. Thank you so much!STATE OF THE TITANICI've finished the center of the bridge, including the telemotor, plaques, flowers, and the tangled mess of wires behind them. I believe this is the centerpiece of the wreck so I've done my best to represent the plaques accurately: when I "publish" them in game, there'lβ¦
- Update 0.7.60 - 18 December 2025
Hi subROVers! Jose writing -0.7.60 is up and running π AboutThis is a minor update that preemptively addresses a security vulnerability in the Unity engine (there's no evidence of it being exploited).Upcoming: Cloud SavesI'm ready to activate Cloud Saves for the game. The Cloud save system is handled by Steam and I don't need to roll a new update, but before I activate it I'd like to ask you to==>Back up your save data Back up your save before Sunday
- Developer Diary: On to the Bridge - 7 October 2025
Hello subROVers! π Jose speaking on a brief devlog with news on the game: STATE OF THE TITANICA commemorative card I made using the game's model (progress up to September)Work on the game still is, for the most part, work on the Titanic. I've just finished A-Deck, with all the collapsed bulwarks, twisted beams, and bits of debris:Overview of the forward section of A Deck looking from starboard to portBird's eye of the forward-port corner, from the well deck to the bridgeWORK AHEADI'm officially moving on to the bridge now, but I have already revised the structure and modeled the sides as part of work on A-deck. I also have the telemotor and davits in place; I modeled them months ago, so importing and placing them was both swift and satisfactory π I had talked of releasing the wreck in beta once I reached this point, but I believe it will be better overall to release the complete modelβ¦
- Developer Diary: it's alive! π - 2 July 2025
Hello subROVvers! π Jose speaking in the first devlog I publish through the news system. First things first:THIS PROJECT IS ALIVE AND ACTIVELY DEVELOPEDSo far I've used this board only to announce game updates or important news. For work in progress or quick dev logs, I've used the Discussion Forum's update thread, Discord, and/or socials, and recently I've added a brief dev update header to the game's Steam front page -I thought I had all the bases covered.I don't post every day, but I've never let things stay quiet for too long, so imagine my surprise when several people got in touch recently to ask if the project was dead. None of my updates had reached them at all! From this I've come to the conclusion that most people only sees posts from this board, so they've been getting the impression that nothing has happened since last August. Needless to say I'm quite bummed, but at least iβ¦
- Update 0.7.50 - 11 August 2024
Hi subROVers! π Jose writing -0.7.50 is now up! This is a major, cumulative update from three updates uploaded to the Beta branch 0.7.39. I'll post here a recap on all the new content and provide links below to the individual updates, shall you want to look further into the details. Without more ado, let's take a look: New Features Upgraded the engine (Unity) from 2018 to 2022 - this alone is a huge leap forward that keeps the game current with the state of the art. Added a new In-Dive Pause menu - the Pause Menu is a trimmed down version of the Main Menu (Gallery, Profile, and Settings) that you can now bring at any time during dives by pressing the ESC key. Sending feedback from the Pause Menu is now the way of sending feedback during dives, to keep the system consistent across the game. Added support for External Display - You can now send the ROV view to the secondary monitor (if aβ¦
- Update 0.7.50 (Beta) - 28 July 2024
Hi subROVers! π Jose writing -0.7.50 is up in the beta branch. Let's take a quick look: New Creatures Here's the Giant Isopod, the great pillbug of the deep ocean, https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3252041736 And here's the Deepsea Lizardfish, Bathysaurus Ferox, with a slender body and many rows of fine, sharp, needle-like teeth. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3289980272 New Wreck I've added an I-201 class submarine to the Hawaii dive -just a small teaser here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3298609824 Note - I decided to not reset Hawaii's map, which might make it harder to find if you have already mapped the sub's location. If you have trouble finding it, just drop me a line. Support for Logitech Extreme 3D Pro A kind player left a positive review even though I know for a fact they bought the game specifically thinkβ¦
- Update 0.7.41 (Beta) - 14 May 2024
Hi subROvers! π Jose here -0.7.41 is up in the beta branch. Let's take a look at the changes: Revised Manual The manual is now up to date with all the new recently added features. New Creatures Here's the Frilled Shark, with its many rows of teeth and characteristic gills, https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3246340399 And here's a complete revision of the Angler Fish (Melanocetus), based on this sighting from MBARI https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3233668029 New Music There's several new tracks, adding to around 40m of in-dive music. I will make all the music available in various ways later this year. External Camera Improvements I've revised the "External Camera Terrain Avoidance System" to tackle edge cases where the corner of the view would sometimes show the back of the terrain (particularly when moving the camera fast against it), and I'veβ¦
- Update 0.7.40 (Beta) - 14 April 2024
Hi subROvers! π Jose here -I've just uploaded version 0.7.40 to the beta branch. I still have to update the game manual, but I didn't want to delay it any further. I will summarize the main changes here: -First of all, in this update we've upgraded the engine from unity 2018 to 2022. This is a huge change in and of itself; it was not in my plans initially (I'm not a fan of big upgrades/engine changes mid-project), but with the extra help thanks to the grant, I decided it was worth the risk. Being on a current version is of course always desirable, though it was a big jump and we've had to revise many systems. If only for this reason, this beta is much more of a beta than previous updates. We've tested and re-tested everything, but consider it more risky than usual. -The update will reset two dives: tokelau (solaris) and san pedro (barrels). Players had reported a few bugs related to thβ¦
- Stable Update uploaded to everyone -Happy Holidays! - 23 December 2023
Hi subROvers! π Jose speaking -I've promoted the 0.7.39b version from beta to default. I haven't had any issues after extensive testing, and several players have confirmed that it fixes the crashes in their systems. In case you wonder, the reason why this is 0.39b instead or 40 is because it's the same version feature-wise, but it's 64-bit. The reason why the game was crashing was simply that I made a script to automate builds and I made a mistake, writing -buildWindowsPlayer instead of -buildWindows64Player. This means I was making 32-bit builds of the game, which impose restrictions in memory that resulted in crashes. Unfortunately, in trying to find the cause for these crashes I investigated everything but overlooked the (32) in the Task Manager π ( π ) So, after a series of facepalms and "I can't believe it!"s (I really couldn't believe it), I uploaded a 64-bit build, and thingsβ¦
- Update 0.7.39 - Developer News - 13 November 2023
Hello subROVers! This news bit is unusual; the update is small, but the events are significant! Game Update This update adds the Chaunacops, a kind of angler fish that regularly shows up in livestreams and always cheers everyone up. It has a unique charm and we're very happy to have it in the game, complete with its characteristic pose on the seafloor and bioluminescent lure. Adding this fish has been a bit of a challenge (even after all the preparatory work we had done on the tripod fish), but we think it's more than worth it. Related to fish, we've revised their movement code to address edge cases. We've also started an optimization pass to improve the game's performance (it's the tip of the iceberg -see below). Developer's blog Hello again! π I'm Jose, the game's developer. Usually I write as 'we' to reflect that there's other people's work in the game, though the studio is "just meβ¦
- Update 0.7.38 - 17 September 2023
Hello subROVers - there's a new fish in town! What's New This update adds the tripod fish to the game, in the dive sites where there's enough depth for it to show up (currently: barrels, humboldt, and tokelau). The tripod fish is a very interesting denizen of the deep. It most characteristic feature is the way in which it stays still against the current, standing on the elongated tips of its pelvic and tail fins, while the pectoral fins are projected upwards, or towards the front, serving as antennae. When swimming, it can either retain this shape, or turn the elongations to the back to acquire a more "traditional" shape. We've represented all these traits in the game, which has been a bit of a challenge since they're (so far) unique to this fish, but we're happy with the results, and we hope you'll enjoy them, too. Moving Forward On the creatures front, we are now working on another icβ¦
- Update 0.7.37 - Steam Deck - 23 July 2023
Hello subROVers! A few days ago subROV received a compatibility test review for the Steam Deck, with a result of Playable. This update addresses the issues preventing the game from getting a Recommended status: We've replaced the "F8" text in the main menu Feedback button with a suitable icon. We've replaced the "Gameplay" and "Controls" icons in the Settings menu. When sending feedback from the Deck, selecting the text window automatically opens an on-screen keyboard. The Accessibility option to use a Bigger Font in the Dive Chat is now active by default for Deck players. We hope these changes will help us improve the game's review, and the overall experience for Steam Deck users. Happy SubROVing! π PS. A Playable result is already great news!
- Update 0.7.36 - 15 July 2023
This is a small update that fixes two bugs: (feedback)General: Game unplayable when updating from old demo versions (due to incompatibilities between versions, the game will reset the save file; we apologize for the inconvenience). (feedback)General: Characters replaced by a square in computers with system language set to Turkish. Both bugs were first reported through the internal feedback system anonymously, so, whomever you are -thank you! (PS. if you include your email when you send feedback, we'll follow up).
- Update 0.7.35 - 29 June 2023
Hello subROVers! We've updated the game from 0.7.31 to 0.7.35. Let's take a look! New Players - Read this Update: July 3rd We've received a few reports from players that get stuck in the main menu with a dive called "ghost of isakov" that they can't start. In all the cases we could troubleshoot, these are players who downloaded the demo last year and bought the game just now. If this is your case, we recommend uninstalling the demo and all related files, then restarting the game, or resetting the game (in settings/gameplay). The demo is no longer supported, nor there will be a new demo in the future, so this is the safest way to proceed. (We'll still see if we can do something about it). If you're stuck in the main menu and don't have the demo installed, please send us an email to info@sqr3lab, and we'll do out best to help. What's New This update adds together four updates that we hadβ¦
- Update 0.7.35 (Beta) - 11 June 2023
Hello subROVers - SOLARIS is here! What's New SOLARIS is a tool used in last month's Falkor cruise to measure reactive oxygen species (ROS) in corals. ROS are byproducts of biological processes involving oxygen; they are toxic and, in most cases, organisms seek to neutralize them. Their ability to do so is affected by stress, so measuring the ROS a coral emits and comparing it to a baseline gives scientists a way to know how stressed it is. SOLARIS takes these measurements right next to the coral without further stressing it, and when you think how much a coral is disturbed by being brought to a lab on the surface, its advantages become very apparent. Here's a dive where you can see the real SOLARIS in action (May 4th). Sometimes they talk about the game, like at 00h55m30s and 02h04m22s (long dives!) https://www.youtube.com/live/l4kI1OaECuc?feature=share&t=3325 SOLARIS appears in the Toβ¦
- Update 0.7.34 (Beta) - 21 May 2023
Hello subROVers! We've finally completed the dives revision! What's New This revision puts most(*) dives in line with the improvements already present in the certification dive 03. As a recap, We've increased the amount of already existing objects overall, and added many new ones in the form of small stones and particularly trash (cans, masks, etc). We've improved the distribution of objects over the terrain (e.g. not placing them on the outer rim of the map). We've improved the transitions between sand and rock (the little patches of sand on top of rocks specifically), and have better control on the textures' distribution. Sea cucumbers are now placed independently from the general pool of bottom dwellers. You won't notice this as a change, but it increases both the number of cukes and other dwellers. (*)We haven't revised the certification dives 02 and 04 just yet. In 02 we might limiβ¦
- Update 0.7.33 (Beta) - 21 April 2023
Hello subROVers! In this build we're adding a new creature to the game, a Bigfin Squid. Bigfin Squid are pretty famous among deep-sea creatures because of their alien-like appearance and their "mysterious nature", as the number of sightings to date is very low -the Magnapinna Archive lists 24 videos. We started working on the bigfin at the beginning of the month using NOAA's footage for reference. Just a few days in, there was a fantastic sighting from Schmidt ocean, so we've incorporated it into the model -this is state-of-the-squid π (sighting starts at 9: 33 :50) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsSUMHQPaHY&t=34429s Even with these references, there's details that are not easy to see, such as the location of the tentacles, so we've consulted with several experts to make sure the model was anatomically correct. We've also given the squid several behaviors: it reacts to the presence ofβ¦
- Update 0.7.32 (Beta) - 5 April 2023
Hello subROVers! This update revises the setup of all benthic (seafloor) creatures, fixing size inaccuracies and adjusting their setups (spawning points, speed, etc). We've also added a new creature, a Bassogigas gillii cusk eel, custom made using footage from from NOAA, which you can find in the certification 03 dive site. (the link below takes you to the spot where the cusk eel shows up) https://youtu.be/134QxuUBybE?t=19861 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2954979082 On top of that, we've made an optimization to the way in which waves are calculated and you might see a gain in performance, though we're still evaluating it. Moving forward, we're working on another benthic creature, a Bigfin Squid (magnapinna), which is spectacular, alien-like, and a rare sight, and we're also updating the dives to follow the improvements made to 03. This should be the content of tβ¦
- Update 0.7.31 - 20 March 2023
Hello subROVers! We've updated the game to v0.7.31. Along with the planned improvements, this update fixes an important bug we discovered just a few days ago -we'll discuss it first and then we'll go over the update itself. The Bug The bug we fixed was making all moving seafloor creatures show up in wrong places. In practice, it was as if the game had no bottom dwellers at all: no sea cucumbers, chimaeras, grenadiers, etc. A Grenadier, one of the "missing" creatures There are several reasons why we didn't spot this earlier, mainly that the issue only happened in a game build, and when we tested builds, we were not specifically searching for these creatures. Since they are scarce, their absence didn't raise any suspicions; it was only after we made a change to make them easier to spot and track that we realized they were not showing up at all. This is not to say nobody noticed: We were rβ¦
