- Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is FromSoftware's biggest Steam launch (that isn't Elden Ring) - 25 August 2023
Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon represents something special for fans of FromSoftware, and anyone with even a passing interest in the rise of the popularity of the Japanese developer. Elden Ring was one of the biggest launches in 2022, so it stands to reason that anything the studio releases afterwards will have a much larger audience potential. No one expects Armored Core 6 to do Elden Ring numbers, of course, but it's already beating every other game FromSoft released before Elden Ring - at least as far as Steam is concerned. The mech shooter, which launched yesterday, has been gradually climbing through Steam's list of most played games. At the time of writing this, the game has peaked at 150,959 concurrent players on Steam, according to SteamDB . That's up from a peak of just above 127,000 shortly after launch. Read more

A fan-made sequel to Dark Souls is on its way, and the team has confirmed the Dark Souls: Nightfall release date as December 21, 2021 - exactly one month before the release of Elden Ring . We previously heard about this impressive Dark Souls mod in October last year and it's only got more impressive since then. The team describe Nightfall as a "direct, fan-made sequel to Dark Souls" and make the promise of having a new story and whole new world map, as well as claiming to have a new combat system too - which is a bit worrying, to be honest, as Dark Souls' fighting mechanics are one of the reasons why it's such a big success. We trust the modders know what they're doing, however - they're fans, after all, so they won't change it that much. - Dark Souls modder recreates Halo maps, ends up overhauling multiplayer - 30 January 2021
A Dark Souls modder has overhauled the original game's multiplayer and added some content from Halo. Inferno Plus' Dark Souls: Remastest mod introduces classic Halo maps, powerups, and reworks to weapons, spells, and abilities. It also removes most of the co-op restrictions from the old PC game . The mod jazzes Battle of Stoicism up with three Halo maps and two game types that can be played by up to 18 players. You can play Team Deathmatch and try to beat the other team to 30 kills, or Capture the Lizard, which involves swiping your enemies' reptile and balancing it on your head while you return to your base. After creating a single-player version of Blood Gulch with bosses and the lot, Inferno Plus explains he set about improving Dark Souls' multiplayer mode Battle of Stoicism. It’s easy to overemphasise the importance of difficulty to Dark Souls, but I’d still argue it’s integral. From Software’s gruelling RPGs do loads else that’s cool, but part of the appeal is bound up with the same satisfaction you get from climbing a mountain. You want that tension, and the blessed relief of finally beating a boss after chucking yourself betwixt its jaws for the 38th time. That’s why I have mixed feelings about this mod for Dark Souls: Remastered that turns the first game into a roguelike with randomised weapons, enemies and levels, and only gives you five lives to reach the end. - Dark Souls fixer Durante opens PC porting studio - 28 January 2019
Peter “Durante” Thoman, the tinkerer whose unofficial tools have helped improve wonky PC versions of console games including Dark Souls and Deadly Premonition , has officially founded his own company dedicated to porting and polishing games. He’s consulted professionally on several PC ports since rising to fame and adulation, including The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel and Rez Infinite , but his new PH3 Games will make a real go of it. Pain and purgatory simulator Dark Souls: Remastered was released a couple of weeks ago, and within hours it was already the playground of a well-known hacker . Malcolm Reynolds, who is known to players from his exploits in other Dark Souls games, was invading players and throwing an accursed, hacked fireball at them, which inflicts diseases and a curse that makes the game even more difficult. He also has a history of getting people softbanned , which means their save file is flagged and they can only play with a small pool of other players (others who ve been softbanned). I spoke to Malcolm Reynolds about why he does all this. I always say this to people that ask, he tells me, but every time they release a game I honestly wish they would have good anti-cheat. (more…)

Crack open a nice cold soul, fans of permanently holding up a shield while you walk. Dark Souls: Remastered has been released on Steam today, a day earlier than we d believed. The original Prepare to Die Edition was pulled from sale two weeks ago, so if you didn t buy it then, this is now your only PC doorway to popular resort town Undead Burg. The Remastered edition is half-price for those who already own the old version. But the changes are minor, and there’s a more unnerving problem. The PC’s original ‘Prepare To Die’ edition of Dark Souls will be removed from sale on STeam tomorrow, ahead of the launch of the mildly fancier Remastered edition, so buy now if you want it for posterity. Folks who own Prepare To Die will get a 50% discount on Remastered, but that’ll still work out more expensive, so the reason to buy now would be to have the old version. Why might you want that if you’ve gone almost six years without it? Ah, well, y’know, I don’t know the mysteries of your mind. Folks who have the original Dark Souls on Steam will be offered a 50% discount on the upcoming Dark Souls: Remastered , Bandai Namco confirmed today. The revisions and additions in the Remastered edition aren’t huge but if you fancy returning to a fancier Lordran, that beats paying full price. Chosen Undeads, On January 5th, Dark Souls™: Prepare to Die™ Edition will be updated to include Japanese localization and the game will become accessible in Japan. As a result, you will be able to select “Japanese” in your game properties, even if you don’t live in Japan. However, please note that due to technical restrictions, if you were to choose “Japanese” as your ingame language, all mods currently added to your game will be disabled as they will not be compatible when the update is live.
