What's that unholy rumbling? An avalanche? Ah, nothing so delicate. It's the next free update for Total War: Warhammer 3 , which launches tomorrow alongside the Tides of Torment DLC. The strategy barons of Creative Assembly have just put up a blog post, and frankly, it's a mess. The Chaos demons of Salaanesh have mastered the foxtrot. The Norscans now give birth to squadrons of porters when they pillage stuff. The Trolls have discovered imperialism, the High Elves have devised a patronage system, and the Dark Elves have learned how to prioritise. It's a close-packed salvo of additions worthy of the cabin scene from A Night Of The Opera . I am trying to think of a Warhammer-appropriate Groucho joke and failing. Read more

We've all got a game in us; a creation we've mentally put together over months or years that we're convinced would be the perfect addition to our Steam library.Well I've got an idea for a Warhammer 40k game, and I think it would be brilliant. A combination of Dawn of War, XCOM, and League of Legends: it's the videogame representation that Games Workshop's hobby deserves. My ideal Warhammer 40k game is free-to-play. Woah - don't leave yet! I know those words strike fear and disgust into many, but the best hobby games are all free-to-play. No Man's Sky has managed to rediscover some of the hype it had back in 2016, when it disappointed us (and some other people maybe?) a little . With a peak of over 40,000 concurrent players the day the Next update arrived—now up to 80,000 on the weekend—there's clearly a resurgence of players and interest. Chris likes what he's seen of the expansion: " It's time to try it again ." Not everyone will, of course, but it's an interesting case study for a game staging a comeback, as it were. This week's PCG Q&A, then touches upon that subject. Which game deserves a No Man's Sky-style comeback? The answers can be pretty broad. It can be any singleplayer or online game that didn't quite reach its potential, or the audience it deserved. Maybe it was a patch or expansion away from being really good. It wasn't a year ago that Relic spoke hopefully about expanding Dawn of War 3 with new races, factions and campaign gubbins beyond its base game. Now, less than ten months since launch, it appears a diminished playerbase has forced the developer to leave the Warhammer-driven RTS behind—"shifting focus to other projects" within its portfolio.    In conversation with Eurogamer , Relic says DoW 3 failed to meet its launch targets, and has consistently underperformed since. A quick glance at sales tracking site Steam Spy suggests the game's peak concurrent player count yesterday was 486 —this against strategy genre and Games Workshop bedfellow Total War: Warhammer 2's 18,064 concurrents . There will be no “major” expansion content for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III and the studio has turned to other projects, Relic confirmed to us today, despite intentions to the contrary discussed last year. The Games Workshop-themed strategy game was met with a divisive response due to its abandonment of real-time strategy mainstays in favour of more of a hero unit approach, in addition to an overly-formulaic singleplayer campaign. DOW’s active players have slumped in the ten months since release – to the point that there were, over the past 30 days, twice as many people playing the original, 2004 Dawn of War and its expansions as there were last Spring’s Dawn of War III.
