- Discovering the roots of Depths of Ascension's world - Devlog 05 - 19 April 2024
If you've ever wondered how such a rich era of history and mythology like ancient Mesopotamia and Sumeria can influence the world of gaming, then you're in the right place! In this devlog, we'll get to know more of Depths of Ascension and explore how these ancient civilizations have inspired both the visual and narrative aspects of the game. To begin with, it's important to understand the cultural and historical significance of these ancient civilizations. Mesopotamia, often referred to as the “Cradle of Civilization”, was home to some of the world's earliest cities and empires. And within this fertile land, the Sumerian civilization flourished, known for its advanced cuneiform writing, complex legal and religious systems, and epic legends such as that of Gilgamesh. The art of these civilizations wasn’t only aesthetically impressive but also a profound expression of their religious and…
- The Ka'tar People: Parasitic Fungi and Their Complex Society - Devlog 04 - 4 April 2024
Today, let's dive into the culture of the Ka'tar People. Although they may initially appear as antagonists, it's important to understand that their biological and cultural characteristics put them in a position of conflict with other humanoid races. Meaning of the name (in Sumerian): ka-tar princely; praise; challenger; a type of fungus or rot ('mouth' + 'to decide; to destroy') The Ka'tar are parasitic fungi that depend on infecting the brain of a humanoid host to survive and reproduce. This dependency puts them in a conflicted relationship with their hosts, as their very existence requires our subjugation. This inevitable imbalance is one of the reasons why the Ka'tar are seen as a threat by humanoid peoples. Furthermore, the Ka'tar lack a full understanding of human notions, resulting in behaviors often incomprehensible to others. The emotions they express on their faces are remnants…
- 2D vs 3D and Unity vs Unreal - Devlog 03 - 14 March 2024
The initial plan for Depths of Ascension was to develop it in Unity, completely in 2D. However, a turnaround occurred when Unity's monetization policy changed, introducing an installation fee. It wasn't just the fee itself that made us reconsider the engine choice, but the unpredictability associated with future contractual changes. The sense that Unity could retroactively modify contracts, as they attempted the previous year, made us rethink our decision. Development was scheduled to begin on November 5th, a commitment established with the management of the grant that funded the production of this vertical slice. We had a short time to decide which engine to use and learn how to use it. We opted for Unreal due to its visual capabilities and decided to adapt the project to 2.5D, with 2D characters in a 3D environment. As we explored the transition to a 3D environment with 2D sprites, we…
- Tackling Turn-Based Strategies - Devlog 02 - 8 March 2024
Greetings, summoner! It is with great enthusiasm that we bring another devlog of our game in development, Depths of Ascension. In this devlog, we will explore in detail the intricate turn-based system and general resources that underpin the gameplay of our game. At the heart of DoA lies a robust and dynamic turn-based system designed to offer an immersive and strategic experience to players. Tick - Game Time Unit: Every action, every movement, is governed by the fundamental unit of time in the game, known as the “tick”. Actor: In DoA, each entity, whether the protagonist of the demo Yehpa, the enemies faced, or the challenging elements of the environment, is considered an actor. Each of them has the ability to perform actions that shape the course of the adventure. Action Bar (AB): The action bar is the measure of the time remaining for an actor to perform its action. It decreases acco…
