Latest Steam announcements

  • R5.0.1 Minor visual tweaks - 24 May 2026

    * The face displayed on the player token now correctly matches the selected explorer type. * The explorer and lives icons on the UI panel have been visually improved. * The tribe policy panel has been reworked. When loading a previously saved R5.0.0 game from Africa, the following temporary graphical issues will occur: * The explorer image on the UI panel may appear split at the waist. * The three lives head-icons on the UI panel will appear cropped. * The face on the player token may not match the explorer type. Note: These save issues are temporary and do not affect gameplay. They will be automatically resolved after starting a new game.

  • Major update R5.0.0 - 14 May 2026

    * Fixed a rare bug where under certain circumstances, a lake could exceed the intended maximum size of three hexes. This fix required a major restructuring of the lake-size checking script, rendering this version incompatible with previous R4 saves due to limitations of the legacy programming software used. * Water is no longer consumed from canteens at the end of each turn when in desert hexes containing oases. * Fixed an issue where pack mounts would remain after an explorer became ill and no healthy bearers were available to lead them. * Implemented culturally plausible, unique shields for named tribes in the tribe info pop-up panel. * Corrected the misspelling of the Avalon Hill board game native tribe name “Kiyuyu” to “Kikuyu.” * The Avalon Hill board game bonus discovery that listed “Hottentot” as a native encounter, has now been updated to “Khoikhoi” at the original authors’ requ…

  • R4.0.8 Bug fixes - 16 April 2026

    * Fixed a bug where the “Witnessed a large tribal battle” bonus was incorrectly treated as a plant, animal, or tribe name, causing the event to be recorded only once in the journal. * Fixed a rare bug in the "Encounter slave traders" bonus that could cause crossfire death counts to exceed the actual number of captives.

  • R4.0.7d More visual tweaks - 14 April 2026

    * Improved graphics on a few disaster cards.

  • R4.0.7c Minor visual tweaks - 12 April 2026

    * Explorer profile pictures on page 1 of the compendium are now varied instead of identical clones. This update is also reflected in the explorer tooltip.

  • R4.0.7b Update - 10 April 2026

    * Resolved an issue where the explorer would escape native capture and sometimes fail to become a bearer. * Fixed a bug where the calendar would decrement by one to two days when attempting to paddle upstream without bearers or when choosing to remain in a lake. * Fixed a couple of typographical and grammatical errors in the compendium. * Canoe travel now correctly refunds movement points and prevents time advancement when an expedition must reconsider its route or lacks sufficient movement points to portage around a cataract. Backtracking to a previous location continues to consume movement points and advance time. * Minor visual improvements have been made to compendium and tooltip illustrations, along with some UI panel graphics. * Men and equipment selections now provide clearer feedback with a "pressed button" visual effect. * Optimized code in a couple of areas to lower resource u…

  • R4.0.7 Update - 1 April 2026

    * Updated the journal layout so it now displays the inside of the front cover, with entries beginning on the first right-hand page. * Corrected a graphics alignment issue with the desert-tribe "Stand your ground" button. * Corrected a minor message-box text alignment issue.

  • R4.0.6b Visual tweak - 28 March 2026

    * Updated the artwork on the compendium cover.

  • R4.0.6 More tweaks - 24 March 2026

    * Fixed an issue where, on rare occasions after first returning to England, the pocket watch’s minute hand would briefly lag behind the actual time for a split second before jumping forward to catch up. * Updated the depiction of the “kamappa” on the bonus card to more accurately reflect its description in the original legend.

  • R4.0.5e Minor tweaks - 23 March 2026

    * Players are now prompted to review portage management while in Mounted Expedition mode, if a friendly chief offers five askaris and pack mounts can be converted into ride mounts. * Oops! I realized I left some redundant code in V4.0.5d that caused the clock hands to appear on the sailing ship screen. This has now been fixed and the correction will take effect after starting a new game. * Enhanced the visual design of the elephant tusk pile featured in the “Chief offers tusk deal” bonus card.

  • R4.0.5d Minor update - 19 March 2026

    * If there are no more journal entries after the right-hand page, clicking on it now closes the journal. Otherwise, clicking it opens the next page.

  • R4.0.5c Updates and bug fix - 17 March 2026

*Fixed an issue where collecting bonuses during the initial expedition then dying before returning to England, caused entries of the lost items to appear in the journal when clicking on the right-hand page. Repeatedly interacting with these entries could also lead to a game crash. * The graphics displayed on the "offer desert chief gifts" screen button was incorrect. * The image of the African giant swallowtail butterfly shown on the bonus card was entomologically incorrect

  • Minor update R4.0.5b - 13 February 2026

    * Fixed a logic anomaly in the "explorer shot by askari" message. * Replaced “Nguni and Tswana natives” (broad umbrella terms rather than specific tribes) with “Ndebele” and "Batawana" for tribe naming consistency and improved historical accuracy.

  • Update R4.0.5 - 26 January 2026

    * Improved the mouse-over behaviour of the activity buttons. * Slightly reduced the volume of the native drums in the policy screen. * Made minor alterations to the tribal zones of Fulani, Pygmy and Xhosa natives to better reflect the ethnogeography of the time. * Bushmen have been placed within their correct tribal zone.

  • R4.0.4d minor fix - 3 January 2026

    * Resolved an issue affecting the ‘Turn Back’ button behavior on the camel/water message.

  • Crash to desktop bug fix R4.0.4c - 2 January 2026

    * The last update introduced a critical bug which caused the game to crash if attempting to enter a desert hex without camels.

  • Update R4.0.4b - 1 January 2026

    * Added a "turn back" option to the give water to camels "now" or "next turn" message when entering a desert hex.

  • Update R4.0.4 - 29 December 2025

    * Changing travel modes or changing destination ports will no longer reset the expedition make-up, with the exception of mounted mode. * Going from mounted to foot mode, or changing to a port that cannot supply animals, ride mounts will either be refunded or converted to pack mounts if bearer numbers allow.

  • R4.0.3 bug fix - 15 December 2025

*Fixed a bug which allowed an expedition in mounted mode to keep more prisoners than there were pack mounts available to convert to rides, by creating extra ride mounts.

  • Update R4.0.2g - 6 December 2025

    *A couple more visual tweaks
