  • Devlog 56: Showoffing - 31 August 2026

As promised, the visuals for the game have undergone a complete makeover. Everything is brighter, more detailed, and fits the style that I’ve wanted the game to have. With hundreds(!) of new tiles and more variations for props and other objects, it feels like a completely different game than before.Along with the visual upgrade, there’s been tons of improvements in terms of guard behavior and fixing bugs. Almost everything has undergone a complete rewrite to make things easier to build on in the future. The main menu/pause screen has also been rewritten from scratch, along with several changes to saving and loading; saves can also be renamed in the main menu to help keep track of them. This has obviously been a very large undertaking and there’s still a long way to go, but progress is still being made, little by little each day.

  • Devlog 55: Remodeling - 6 July 2026

Work on the new guard state machines is now mostly done, so now I’ve moved onto making some necessary changes in other levels to make sure everything is compatible. Since the guard redo took so long, a lot of other fixes are going to be patchwork at this point with the bare minimum done to ensure everything works fairly well together, as I’ve been working on the same levels with little new content and it’s greatly affecting my motivation to get everything done. However, once most of those fixes are in place a new update to the demo can be pushed out and work can resume on other parts of the game. Most of it has already been planned out, and with the new fixes and systems in place iterating on it should go much faster. In other news, I’ve hired an artist to completely redo most of the existing tile and sprite art. I’m not quite ready to show it yet, but it’s going to be a massive improvem…

  • Devlog 54: Returning - 30 May 2026

I missed making a post last month and almost missed it again this month only because I've been spending all of my time rebuilding the core mechanics of the game. The good news is that it's almost done, and an update should be available within the next couple of months. Most of these changes are for light detection and guard behavior, as well as countless backend changes to make things run smoother and easier for me to build on in the future. There have also been some changes to the Trainyard level to make it somewhat easier to navigate as well as a checkpoint system.Additionally, I'm in the process of getting help from other artists to assist with a complete makeover of the game's visuals in the style I've been looking for. That's going to be the whole post since I have lots of work to get back to, but in short:The game is still being worked onProgress is being madeThere is no set releas…

  • Devlog 53: Explaining - 8 March 2026

In this post I thought I’d do a little explaining for how I’ve been changing guard and player behavior to use state machines to be more robust, in case any other developers may be reading this and encounter similar issues. Essentially, it makes heavy usage of enums and Godot’s signal system.EnumsFirst, Guard is declared as a class at the start of the script so its enums can be accessed from any other scene/script.extends CharacterBody2D class_name GuardGuard enums are split into three types: BASE_STATE, WEAPON_STATE, and INTERACT_STATE.enum BASE_STATE { DAY_IDLE, DAY_WALK, IDLE, SITTING, SOUND_ALERTED, GO_TO_SOUND, ... }Base state is what the guard is currently doing right now. This could be walking, idle, searching, etc. Since this is a state machine, it can only be in one base state at a time. This gets rid of the problem of creating giant if/else statements with dozens of bools to de…

  • Devlog 52: Stating - 10 February 2026

The past month and a half has been spent solely on implementing state machines for the player and guard. This is unfortunately somthing I should’ve spent more time reading up on when I first started this game, as going back to implement it everywhere has been a major pain. It also means that just about every other system in the game is going to be affected by this, so this will most likely be a gradual implementation spread out over the course of several new demo releases. However, this has also been a good learning experience for Git and understanding how different branches should be structured (separate branches for release, development, feature and hotfix).I’ve been quiet for longer than usual since this is taking up a lot of my time and I’ve really had to maintain my focus because of how many different systems this is affecting and how they’re all tied together. With that being said,…

  • Devlog 51: Refactoring - 20 December 2025

Previous devlogs can be viewed on https://blog.vegint.com/The demo has now been out for almost two weeks, and I’d like to thank each of you that have played the demo, provided reviews and feedback, and helped me get this project into a playable state. With that being said, the state the demo was launched in was not as thoroughly tested as it should’ve been, and I unfortunately had to watch several game-breaking bugs and crashes take place while watching others play it well after release. Most of the worst bugs have now been fixed, but some of the larger ones will take time and are symptoms of very poorly written code.To put it bluntly, it’s bad. Really bad. Since this is my first project, there are a lot of things that I’ve learned about Godot over the course of development for how things should be structured, but I’ve put most of them off and just kept piling up tech debt to get the dem…

  • Devlog 50: Debugging - 3 November 2025

Previous devlogs can be viewed on https://blog.vegint.com/.I’m in the final stretch towards getting the demo out and ready. The only things missing at this point are some art assets that need to be imported, more dialogue, some minor UI changes and any other stray bugs that may pop up.FixesIn total, there are about 250 bugs, fixes and changes that I am in the process of fixing. Some of them are simple like fixing typos or moving props around. Others are more complex like redoing guard AI and tracking down the root cause of other obscure bugs. Most of these were knocked out in the past week or so, but a few more remain and should be fixed in the coming weeks.ArtMore character sprites have been added, each of which can be customized with custom hair and skin colors to make characters stand out.DialogueMost of the final dialogue is in place and flows properly based on actions the player ha…

  • Devlog: Dating - 4 October 2025

Previous devlogs can be viewed on blog.vegint.com.Actual dating is a lot easier than trying to recreate an entire date from scratch, because with a real date you have someone else pulling half the conversation, the rest of the restaurant is already there and doesn't need you to decide what they look like, and the staff can pull their own weight. In a dating game, these are all things you need to do on your own.DialogueThis is without a doubt where most of my time has been going. Writing good dialogue that serves a purpose and ensuring it all flows properly is becoming the hardest part of making the game.Sprite RandomizationSprites can now be randomized even further with additional hairstyles, outfits, and sizes. Each part of the sprite (hair, head, clothes, hands, feet) are separate and in grayscale with values only to allow for any combination of colors.More dialogueDid I mention there…

  • Devlog: Operating - 5 September 2025

Previous devlogs can be viewed on blog.vegint.com.90% of the past month was spent working on one level. However, that includes level design, art, AI, game mechanics, optimization, and everything else under the game development sun.So let’s get into it.Level DesignThis palace level has a fairly straightforward design: two main corridors, a foyer, living areas, a balcony, and a lot of side rooms, all of them filled with enemies. Work with your fellow troops to get everything cleared out.ArtI figured out I’m not necessarily bad at art, I just never wanted to set aside the time to work on it. Once I did though, everything started to look way better overall. It’s now more than just a few scattered props and blank walls, it’s an actual level. Amazing.AII didn’t want to just make a bunch of mindless drones that stand there and take it while you gun them down. These are trained soldiers, so the…

  • Devlog: Continuing - 5 August 2025

Previous devlogs can be viewed on blog.vegint.com.It’s been about a month or so since the last development update, but there’s been a lot of changes since then. Here’s a quick rundown:ShootingThis is a new level with open combat, putting you against an entire palace filled with guards that have one goal: kill you dead. You’ll have some backup though and a lot of grenades to clear the place out, so stay on your feet, keep moving, and don’t let off the trigger until the mission is complete.Day TradersYou can now hire and place individual traders to help you with trading commodities! Each trader has their own specialty that gives you a bonus when they sell their stock’s worth of it. You can also place two or more traders next to each other for an additional bonus. Take note of their asking salary and decide who you can afford to hire and where they’ll be working from.Hired NPCs can also ha…
