- Welcome, SURFACE - 13 July 2026
Introducing GRIEFS SURFACEFormerly known as GRIEFS Texture Ripper, SURFACE represents the next evolution of the project. As the software has grown beyond texture extraction into a complete material authoring and processing application, the original name no longer reflected its broader capabilities. While SURFACE builds upon the same core functionality, it has been completely rewritten from the ground up using Rust and WGPU, delivering significant improvements in performance, quality, flexibility, and future expandability.Thank you to everyone who supported the project over the years. This rewrite would not have been possible without you. What's NewCompletely rewritten architecture (Rust + WGPU)New rendering engineRedesigned user interfaceImproved PBR generation pipelineHDR & EXR import/exportFilter Stack (Pixel Art, Kuwahara, Toon, Cel Shading, and more)Height blendingRuntime hardware ups…
- 2026.4 Projection matrices and exporting fixes. - 13 March 2026
Hi there,The introduction of tangent warping accidentally made the projection matrices worse for the rest of the crop region creation and export pipeline. In this patch we address that by making sure each crop manipulation feature works properly together and restoring the previous functionality of auto-clockwise point sorting. This had to be done in exporting pipeline as well to get visually consistent results.Thank you for reporting this issue! Your feedback helps us improve things for everyone and make sure we deliver the best experience possible.– Gabe PS: Linux build is planned to be in the next patch! ːsteamhappyː

- Update 2026.2: Professional DDS Export & Workflow Automation - 8 February 2026
Hello everyone! We are back with a highly requested update focused on one thing: getting your textures into your game engine faster and more efficiently.Update 2026.2 overhauls the Export pipeline, introducing native support for industry-standard formats and powerful new workflow tools to save you clicks. Here is what is new:Native .DDS Support with Smart Compression:You no longer need external tools to convert your textures for game engines. Texture Ripper now supports DirectDraw Surface (.DDS) export natively. We have implemented "Smart Compression" logic to ensure your textures are optimized for VRAM usage right out of the box: Normal Maps: Automatically exported using BC5 (Optimized 2-channel). This results in standard "Yellow/Green" normal maps that save massive amounts of memory while retaining high quality. Packed Normals: If you enable "Pack Displacement in Alpha," the engine autom…
- GRIEFS Texture Ripper: A New Year, A New Chapter - 2 January 2026
2025 has been a tough year for many people in the game industry, and I felt that impact too. But difficult years also open unexpected doors. While searching for work, I started building GRIEFS.xyz — and for the past 10 months, I’ve poured everything I have into it, often working 18‑hour days to bring this platform to life.Despite the challenges, GRIEFS has grown more than I ever expected this year:171 users123 projects created114 exportsAverage usage time: 80 minutes/daySeeing creators find real value in something I built from scratch means more than I can express. Helping people make better work, faster, is what drives this entire project. In 2025, GRIEFS Texture Ripper became a tool for indie developers, architects, and aspiring game creators, turning almost any image into game‑ready PBR materials in seconds, with a fully non‑destructive workflow that keeps every step editable.Under t…
