- Modders are turning Spelunky 2 into a sprawling Metroidvania, and you can try it right now - 28 April 2023
Steam tells me that I have 381 hours in the first Spelunky , but a mere 74 in Spelunky 2 . The reason for this is simple: I'm terrible at it to such a spectacular degree that my clumsy attempts in Spelunky 1 look like virtuoso performances by comparison. But perhaps I'd get more into the second game if it were transformed into a Metroidvania... Read more.

- 1.26 Released! - 20 September 2022
ːspel2caveːːspel2caveːːspel2caveːːspel2caveːːgoldidolː I'm very happy to announce that with the release of v1.26, we've reached a big milestone with Spelunky 2's online multiplayer. You can now play Spelunky 2 online, with friends or random players, in Adventure Mode or Arena Mode, and now... between all available platforms (Steam, PS4/PS5, XB1/XBX, Switch) through cross-play! With that, I feel like all of our major goals for online multiplayer have been met, but to be clear, we will still be monitoring social channels for feedback and plan on making further improvements to the Spelunky 2 online experience. Shout out to BlitWorks for their tireless efforts to make this possible! As Always, Thanks For Your Patience We really appreciate that so many players have stuck with us as we worked on online multiplayer. Trust me when I say that we always feel frustrated ourselves when something do…
- Spelunky 2 speedrunner and world record holder Twiggle dies at 25 - 4 July 2022
Spelunky 2 speedrunner and world-record holder Matthew Joseph Julian, better-know by his online alias Twiggle, has died at the age of 25. Twiggle came to prominence for his in-depth knowledge of the game and expertise across the many different varieties of Spelunky and Spelunky 2 speedrun. PC Gamer spoke to him last year, after he managed to break the game's world record for gold acquisition (through the rather brilliant of method of just blowing everything up)... Read more.

- Please look at this bee that didn't make it into Spelunky 2 - 1 October 2021
Spelunky 2 is a great game. A brilliant action roguelike and worthy successor to an all-time genre classic. But it turns out Spelunky 2 could have achieved absolute perfection, if not for the (frankly criminal) omission of a bumbling fuzzy mount... Read more.
- One Year on Steam - Arena Mode Online! - 30 September 2021
ːgoldidolː September 29 was the One Year Anniversary of Spelunky 2's release on Steam! Thank you for joining us on this journey... whether you're playing the game, giving us feedback, or making/sharing content. In one year, we've released many updates to fix bugs, add features, change balance, and improve online multiplayer... and there's still more to come (including crossplay, which I'll address below). None of this would be possible without an energetic and thoughtful community. Most recently, we ported the game to Nintendo Switch and, with the help of our friends at 8-4, we also released the game in Japan and Korea. Check out our Japanese trailer, directed by Derek Lieu, with help from 8-4: Arena Mode Online! Another big addition to Spelunky 2 is the ability to invite friends to play Arena Mode online! It works similarly to co-op - just enter the in-game lobby and from there, you ca…
- Playing difficult games is like eating spicy food, says Spelunky creator - 21 July 2021
I tuned into a design talk by Spelunky creator Derek Yu today, expecting to learn about what went right and wrong during Spelunky 2's development over the last few years. And I got that, but I was surprised to find buried in Yu's talk a tangent about what can make difficulty in games so satisfying. How difficult games should be, and how accessible they should be, is a perennial topic, and whenever it flares up it's a sign to log off Twitter for a few days. But instead of the usual exhausting arguments about easy modes, I found Yu's breakdown—which he builds around a spicy food analogy—really insightful. It also made me hungry... Read more.

- Spelunky 2 mod Overlunky lets you zoom out and blow up every level - 23 January 2021
I’ve exhausted Spelunky 2 of everything it can give me (because I’ve no interest in pursuing its remaining secret endings). I’ve therefore turned to mods to help extend the experience. There’s not much available so far, but there is Overlunky, a mod framework that lets you teleport to any level, spawn items including explosions, and zoom the camera out way far. It’s cool to play around with, and hopefully a platform for more to come. (more…)
