- v1.1.11 Patch Notes - 24 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.1.11 Team HQ upgrades reach everything they name: your hits (not damage-over-time ticks), the enemy hits you take (not poison or disease ticks), every healing potion and every combat XP award. Joining or leaving a team takes effect at once. Team rankings count real members, empty teams are cleared, and a team or guild passes to its next highest-level member when the leader leaves. Beating a WANTED target counts wherever it happens, and a Crown bounty on a player is paid to whoever beats them in a duel. A new character with a deleted one's name starts clean. Deleting a character also ends its reign and removes its mail and auction listings. An Old God kill pays its reward once, wilderness gold finds pay on the dungeon's scale, and the Alchemist's Potion Mastery works on every healing potion. A spell short of mana says how much it needs, and menu lines no longer show thei…
- v1.1.10 Patch Notes - 23 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.1.10 Mael'Keth is tuned so a level-30s party can win: 22,000 HP and 265 Strength. A level-32 party wins a little under half its fights. The five floors before every Old God grow tougher, up to +25% HP and damage on the floor before the god. A god's War Cry and similar buffs last three rounds instead of the whole fight, and the intro screen shows the HP the god really has. Dialogue answers before a god fight now apply, and damage and defence answers count for the whole party. Monster special attacks on companions are softened like normal hits, a god's ability aimed at a companion is its normal attack, and tanks protect themselves before they taunt. Items waiting for room in your pack reach alt characters, can no longer be lost, and arrive when you open /boss. Bequests from teams reach the team's leader (for older teams, once an admin has set the leader). The Inn lists ev…
- v1.1.9 Patch Notes - 21 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.1.9 Two player reports, fixed: the feet slot offered weapons instead of boots, and gear sets ignored most of the gear people were actually wearing. Choosing the feet slot to equip from the backpack now lists your boots. It listed your weapons. Armor, rings and weapons "of Shielding" are no longer labelled in the backpack. Real shields still are. Gear sets count the gear you already have. A set piece is recognised by the template it dropped as, which gear from before v1.1.0 never recorded, so the same Leather Cap could count or not depending on when it dropped. That gear now has its template read from its name, which is never written into your save. On our server 118 player set bonuses switch on or go up. The name has to be one the game really generates for that piece, in any language, enchanted or not, and it is compared against every item so the closest match wins: a S…
- 1.1.7 Patch Notes - 20 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.1.7 A repair release for the economy. A bug closed back in v0.65.3 left a few items in the world with stats and prices in the hundreds of millions, and it turned out the ways those were made were not the only ways left open. This release puts limits on what an item can be, repairs the ones that already exist, and closes the rest. Items have limits Every number on an item is bounded, wherever an item enters play: on load, in the shops, out of an auction, a guild bank or an inheritance. Cursed gear keeps its penalties. Items already over the line are repaired the next time they are loaded, and every repair is written to the server's log. Nothing legitimate is touched. The best weapon the dungeon can drop is near 1,400 power at level 100 and the most valuable item in the game's tables is 4,000,000 gold; the limits sit well above both. Enchanting, reforging, the arena An en…
- V1.1.5 - World Boss - 8 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.1.5 - Hold the Line Last release made the world boss show up on time, made it killable, and made it pay. This one makes fighting it a game. Before, the boss's turn was a die roll: sixty percent of the time some ability, picked at random, with nothing to do about it but drink. Now it tells you what it is about to do, and the round gives you a way to answer, and some answers need more than one of you. It telegraphs Every couple of minutes the boss readies its next move from a fixed cycle. The round shows it, its answer, its cost, and how long until it lands. A Strike is yours. Brace and it lands for a tenth of your health. Ignore it and it lands for three tenths and brings its status. A Channel is everyone's: anything battlefield-wide, unavoidable, or healing. If enough of you Interrupt before it lands (two, or one if you are alone), it breaks and the boss staggers: for t…
- v1.1.3 - Keep Them Alive - 8 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.1.3 - Keep Them Alive Someone told me their companion took nine of ten hits in a fight. That is the targeting doing what it is meant to (a fighter beside an Assassin draws the attacks), but it showed me that allies had no way to look after themselves once their potions were gone, and that you had no say in how they fought. This release is about keeping the people you bring into the dungeon alive. Allies look after themselves Below 40 percent health an ally reaches for a defensive or evasive ability before anything else. With nothing left, they brace: half damage from ordinary hits, monster specials, and life drain alike, instead of swinging. They drink their own potion before playing medic for someone slightly less hurt. An NPC who dies in your party now rolls the 2 percent team permadeath rate, not the 8 percent rate for NPCs you killed yourself. That one had been wron…
- v1.1.2 - Open Issues - 7 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.1.2 - The Open Issues After the bug pass I had a short list of things that needed a patch, plus the oldest requests on the GitHub tracker. Seven of the eight are in. The eighth, the Player District, is big enough to be its own release. It is designed and will come in the next major release. Groups A grouped player who dies now dies properly: the same resurrection and permadeath rules as a solo death, then the Temple. Before, they were only pulled out of the fight and hit with the wrong penalty at their next login. Followers get their own ability cooldowns instead of sharing the leader's. Town Haggling works now. The weapon and armor shops offer aggle on the buy prompt. Offer at least 80 percent of the price, within your Charisma tier, three tries per shop per day. Push your luck with none left and you may be thrown out until tomorrow. Tax is charged on the agreed price.…
- v1.1.1 - Bugfixes - 3 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.1.1 - A Bug Pass Regalia added systems. This one fixes things. I checked 5 main codebase areas. About seventy problems came back, and each one was checked against the source before it was fixed. Nothing new to learn here. Some things you were used to living with are gone. The ones that matter most Every NPC lost its innate weapon and armor power when a single-player save loaded. The fields were only ever written by the online server. NPCs hit as hard as they were meant to now. The world simulator could edit the wrong player's marriages and lovers, and the guard that stops your spouse from attacking you while you slept read the wrong save. Fixed. On the online server, a character brought back with /restore could not save until the next restart, one player's autosave could starve everyone else's, and nine daily counters were played on one copy of your character and saved…
- Release 1.1.0 - Regalia - 3 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.1 "Regalia" - Gear Sets and a Black Market Worth Visiting Coronation put you on the throne. Regalia is about what you wear once you are there. This is the first release since 1.0 that adds systems instead of fixing them, and it is aimed squarely at the stretch from level 20 to 40, where the gear ladder ran thin and the gold piled up with nowhere to go. Gear sets Wear pieces from the same family and you get bonuses at two, four, and six pieces. Eight families are sets in this release: Leather, Chain, Silk, Shadow, Steel, Reinforced, Forged, and Mithril. Shops and dungeon drops both produce them, so you can put a set together either way. The equipment screen and /gear show what you are wearing, how many pieces you have, and which bonuses are on. An item's detail view tells you which set it belongs to. The bonuses are modest at two pieces, meaningful at four, and build-def…
- v1.0.6 - Hotpatch - 2 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.0.6 - Typing Fix One fix, and it is the one I have been chasing since the online server opened. When a chat message, a tell, or a world event landed while you were in the middle of typing, it would wipe out what you had typed. Every time I fixed it for one way of connecting it broke for another. This time I stopped guessing. I built a test rig that connects to the server every way the game supports, types half a line, sends a message from a second account, and records exactly what shows up on the screen. It turned out there were four different problems, one per kind of connection. What you will notice Browser players: you can now see what you type in game. You could not before. That was not a display glitch on your end, the server simply never sent your keystrokes back. SSH players: a message arriving mid-line no longer erases your text and then submits it invisibly. Mu…
- v1.0.5 - Bug fixes - 2 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.0.5 - Polish I walked through the whole game after 1.0.4 looking for things that get in the way of new players. This release is the result. Nothing new to learn. Update and play. The game was telling you the wrong keys Five hints pointed at keys that do something else. The low health warning sent you to for the Healer, which is actually Home. The Healer is . In combat it told you to drink a potion with , which is Disarm. Potions are . The level-up hint named the wrong key for the Level Master, which is . And every caster was told to cast spells with 'C'. There is no C. Spells are on the quickbar, number keys. All fixed, in all five languages. Dungeon rooms with monsters said CLEARED The tag in the room header for a room that still has monsters in it read , same as an empty one. It has been that way since 0.60. It now says DANGER. Hints that never showed up Three tips we…
- v1.0.4 - Bug Fixes - 1 September 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.0.4 - Bug Fixes Six fixes for bugs you reported, plus one change to how the world names its people. Nothing new to learn. Update and play. Party XP split no longer resets If you set your party to share XP evenly and later found your character quietly taking all of it, this was the game, not you. Any fight without your party present, and any teammate death, was rewriting your setting. It now remembers what you asked for. Even split means even across whoever is alive that fight, no matter how your party changes. One thing to do once: if your split is already stuck on 100% for you, open Party Management in the dungeon, press X for the XP screen, then press E. That resets it to even and it will stay that way. Gambling can no longer put you in debt High-Low dice at the Inn could take you far below zero gold if you doubled down and lost. The stake now leaves your purse when y…
- version 1.0.3 Patch Notes - 9 August 2026
- New Persistent Auto-Map in the Dungeon (change in settings or press 'P' from the dungeon map to display. - Fixed a bug with team mates not showing up on eachother's teams. - Fixed a bug where character HP could go negative. - Fixed auto-combat - Some combat tweaks
- v1.0.1 - Hotfix - 4 August 2026
The previous security hardening update broke SSH authentication for some Steam and Desktop users when authenticating to the online server. This has been fixed.
- Usurper Reborn Release 1.0.0 - 4 August 2026
Usurper Reborn 1.0 "Coronation" The Beta label comes off. Nothing in this release is a new subsystem. Version 1.0 is what the last year of work was building toward: a world that runs whether or not you are watching, a progression curve that no longer punishes the players it was meant to reward, five languages at full parity, and a server a stranger can host safely. This is the seal on that work. The level 40 wall is gone Telemetry showed players leaving the game at the exact point it was supposed to open up. Around level 40, one bad fight became a dead character, and a dead character became a deleted one. That is fixed, and not by making the world safe. The experience curve tapers. The early-game bonus now winds down smoothly through level 40 instead of falling off a shelf at 21. Bosses let you run. Your odds of escaping a boss fight climb as you drop below half health. A losing fight i…
- Beta v0.65.7 Patch Notes - 22 July 2026
Update 0.65.7 - Painted Faces and Player Choice This update brings AI-painted character portraits to the online realm, puts your difficulty setting on screen and under your control, overhauls the Online Play client's color rendering, and ships a stack of fixes from a full pre-release audit. NPC Portraits, Reimagined Townsfolk in the online realm now get painted character portraits. Each NPC's portrait is generated once from their race, class, sex, age, and station, then cached and rendered straight into your terminal. Portraits adapt to what your connection can display: 24-bit color on the web terminal, 256 colors over SSH, and classic 16-color half-block ANSI art for BBS-style sessions and the game's own Online Play client. Royalty gets the royal treatment. When an NPC takes the throne, their portrait is repainted with crown and regalia. Screen reader mode, plain-text terminals, and th…
- Beta 0.65.6 Release Notes - 12 July 2026
v0.65.6 Patch Notes: Renewable Lives, Death's Door, and Smarter NPCs Two major passes in one release. The headline: we did a full end-to-end analysis of the online player experience, from live combat telemetry down to the math of the resurrection economy, and fixed what it found. The second pass makes the NPC population meaningfully smarter about staying alive and spending its time. Full technical details live in the repo release notes; here is what changes for you. The level-40 problem The numbers said something interesting: combat was never too hard. Win rates are 97 to 99 percent in every level band. But almost nobody was getting past level 40, and the reason was math, not skill. Online characters had 3 lifetime resurrections that never regenerated, and the journey from level 20 to 40 is roughly 900 fights at about a 1 percent death risk per fight. Expected deaths over that journey:…
- Beta 0.65.5 Release Notes - 11 July 2026
v0.65.5 - Countdown The road to 1.0 continues. We just ran a full audit of every system in the game ahead of leaving Beta, and this release fixes everything serious it found. No new content this time: this is a correctness and stability release, and some of these fixes matter a lot. Boss Fights Fixed Area-of-effect damage was skipping the Old Gods' defenses entirely. Single-target attacks correctly respected a boss's phase immunity and divine armor, but AoE spells and abilities (Fireball, Chain Lightning, Maelstrom of the Faithful) hit the health bar directly, so a caster could burn a god down during a phase that was supposed to be immune. AoE now runs through the same defenses as every other attack. The Old God fights play the way they were designed again. Save Protection We closed the bug behind a long-standing and nasty rare issue: under specific conditions on the online server, a sa…
- Beta 0.65.4 Release Notes - 3 July 2026
v0.65.4 - Countdown A player-experience update focused on the early game and on making character progression something you can actually see coming. Plus the biggest companion-writing addition in a long while: every companion now has a story that starts early and builds the whole way down. Your First Fight New characters used to get plenty of guidance in town, then walk into the dungeon and find an empty entrance room with four unlabeled exits and no idea where to go. That gap is closed. The dungeon points you at your first fight. A fresh character now gets a single in-world line showing which way the nearest monster is, until the first kill lands. Your first kill always makes level 2. Kill number one now tops you up to the next level, so the whole loop (fight, level, unlock) demonstrates itself immediately. Level-ups announce what you gained and what is next. New abilities used to appea…
- Beta 0.65.3 Release Notes - 28 June 2026
Usurper Reborn v0.65.3 - "Countdown" A big maintenance and balance update on the road to 1.0: two Power Strike fixes, a high-severity economy exploit closed, a data-driven early-game survivability pass, and a stack of quality-of-life improvements pulled straight from player feedback. Combat and Classes Power Strike (class ability) fixed for two-handed weapons. While wielding a two-hander, the trained Power Strike ability could deal less damage than a plain auto-attack. The two-handed damage bonus that normal swings get was not being applied to the ability. It now is, so Power Strike (and other physical melee/ranged abilities) reliably beats a basic swing for two-handed builds, at every level. Power Attack now triggers your weapon enchantments. The tactical Power Attack was silently skipping every on-hit effect (life steal, elemental procs, holy bonus vs undead/demons, poison coating, an…
