  • The Big Update - Ship Systems - 13 August 2025

This is Part Two of the series of articles discussing the upcoming changes to the game. Read Part One here. This part is focused on the SHIP SYSTEMS!As an intro note to this post, I've been applying for a gamedev grant from the Australian government for the last couple of days and this has been very, very onerous on my time. Who knew one could face such paperwork and live. We'll see what comes of it, but if I get the grant, it'll be very good for the game. I have no idea what my chances are of getting it, but it really would be a godsend if I did, lol. Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled update on the new direction for the game!Crew members can't do much if they can't interact with the ship they are crewing, and the ship's systems are how they do that! So I want to make those interactions as interesting as possible, and I don't think simply matching die was the best way to achieve t…

  • The Big Update - Crew Members! - 16 July 2025

While the big update is steadily percolating towards a freshly brewed cup of gaming goodness, I wanted to spend some time discussing the changes that are being implemented and how they will radically change the gameplay of Dice Trek (for the better!).So I plan to do a series of update posts that each discuss a different aspect of how the game is being altered. This first entry in the series will be centered around CREW MEMBERS!Your crew are the ones holding the ship together by the sheer force of their will. They carry out your orders and put their lives on the line for you. However, I don't think that you feel this as you are play the game right now. I want this to change.Step 1The VisualsTo begin with, I've added more variations to the faces, as you can see from the gif above, as well as actual bodies, so they are no longer represented as floating heads, lol. I've also added their por…

  • Demo Unlisted - 11 July 2025

Hello everyone,I have just removed the demo for Dice Trek, but only for a brief period of time. After the pressures of getting ready for NextFest meant that I couldn't playtest and ruminate on design aspects as much as I wanted to, and a substantial amount of feedback from the amazing steam community and elsewhere, I've now made a number of design changes to the game. Some of these changes are very substantial and alter the game in fundamental ways. Because of this I don't feel comfortable "advertising" the game with the current demo.In short, it feels dishonest. The experience you get from playing the current demo is not the same as the experience you would get from playing the game with the new direction it is heading and I don't want players to be misled by this.So I am currently working my way through the implementation of the design changes and, while I can't give an exact date, I am…

  • Update v1.0.1.0 (Demo) - 15 June 2025

As this update contains the last of the currently known bugs, I'm gonna pull us into the next minor version with this one. Enemies have been made slightly better, specials have been balanced a bit more, and there's now a fairly comprehensive record keeping of the various events that you can view anytime by hovering a crew member or a system.FIXED: Double damage special was not applying the extra damage correctly, now it is.FIXED: Filling the dicycler while it is aimed at the weapons system would result in a phantom, non-functional pip appearing in the enemies weapon system. This no longer happens.FIXED: A situation which could occasionally result in enemy systems not being targeted has been corrected.FIXED: An attribution error meant that enemy ship dice had their probabilities modified by the players ship instead of their own. This has been corrected.FIXED(?): I have done more work aro…

  • Update v1.0.0.5 (Demo) - 10 June 2025

Yet more bugs squashed. My fly swatter is wearing thin.Fixed/Updated: Enemy pre-battle display updated to accurately reflect shields, plus their attached weapons are now shown.Fixed: An off by 1 error in the Gain Crew Event was making it so that it wouldn't give you a crew member if you had 1 less than the max crew members for your chosen class of ship.AI has been made slightly smarter yet again.Fixed: If a crew member was in the middle of a boarding party when the enemy died, they would be permanently AFK. This should be fixed now.Fixed: More tutorial bugs have been squashed, mainly around crew member damage Fixed: Sabotage dice (from a boarding party) would roll one additional time after determining its result, meaning that the face would not match with the outcome. This no longer happens.Fixed: Systems were not removing themselves as listeners for a boarding party ended signal, which…

  • Update v1.0.0.4 (Demo) - 10 June 2025

Good news everyone! After much kerfuffle and an excess of faffing about, I believe that I've fixed the resolution scaling issue. I've only got a 2560x1080 monitor to test it out on, so I can't be 100% sure it's fixed, but I've tried out every resolution I can and it looks like the fix correctly scales and positions the game window, while also killing the mouse offset problem that was happening alongside it.Fixed(?): Resolution scaling issues.Fixed(?): Mouse coordinates were being incorrectly offset from the visual position. If you are still getting issues around game window scaling, positioning or mouse offsetting, please let me know, with a description of your current resolution and how the game window is behaving! I appreciate the bug reports!

  • Update v1.0.0.3 (Demo) - 9 June 2025

Yet another patch coming down the pipeline. I've been focusing on trying to get the tutorial as robust as possible. There is still a bug in regards to monitors with large resolutions (I think especially ultrawide monitors) that I have yet to find a cause for, hopefully the fix for that will be in the next update (which may have to be tomorrow as it is 1am where I am). Anyway, here's the patch notes:Fixed: Armoured system taking damage did not play a sound correctly.Fixed: Damage applied after the shield system was disabled did not bleed through to hull correctly.Fixed/Updated: More edge case for the tutorial system have been discovered and corrected, plus the overall system has been made more robust and understandable, reminding players of the next action they have to take when the tutorial requires them to take an action to advance.Fixed(?): Some dice would occasionally fail to stop ro…

  • Update v1.0.0.2 (Demo) - 9 June 2025

Bug reports are coming in thick and fast, lol. I'm a solo dev on a shoestring budget, so it's to be expected I guess. In any case, I'm squashing them as fast as possible. Here's the latest list of changes/corrections:When filling a system with crew members, the number of pips was being incorrectly calculated, especially in regards to "overfilling" the system (such as overfilling shields to negate damage for the next turn). This should be fixed now.A number of edge cases has popped up in the tutorial which prevented progress or interacted weirdly. I think I've solved most, if not all, of these.Game sometimes crashed if projectiles continued firing after an enemy had died. This should be fixed now.Enemy AI for filling systems has been improved. It shouldn't spam fill system health so much now. More improvements will come later. You can now clear your save file by going to the Options scree…

  • Update v1.0.0.1 (Demo) - 9 June 2025

Just pushed a small update to the Dice Trek Demo with a number of critical crashing bugs.- Fixed a crashing bug when a crew member hit level 3 and you filled a system dice with them.- Fixed a crashing bug on the ship selection screen where a font was being incorrectly referenced.- Attempted to fix a bug where pressing a key on the shop screen moved to the map screen (can't replicate it so unable to confirm the fix).
