The Last Campfire been a huge undertaking for a tiny team at Hello, and releasing on Steam marks a major milestone for the team. Fresh from porting Joe Danger to mobile (nearly 6 years ago!) a designer, Stevie, started a passion project which became The Last Campfire. Later he was joined by Chris who made every bit of art you see in Campfire. Then finally the team completed when James joined as programmer to help bring the whole thing together. Everything in the game is the work of these three guys over, in some cases, a large number of years. Hello Games, the same folks behind No Man's Sky , launched a smaller puzzle adventure game last year that you may have missed hearing about. Clearly Hello Games themselves didn't forget about The Last Campfire , because they've just released a free update that actually adds new puzzles to the game. I would love to know how The Last Campfire was made. Not the coding or the art, which I'll happily admit I would not understand even if I had a lifetime of education ahead of me. But the thinking behind the design. This is a puzzle game in which puzzles are everywhere - puzzles of different types, of different approaches, puzzles operating at different levels of the construction. Somewhere I imagine a huge wall filled with paper and bits of string - one of those evidence walls from the kind of shows you get on the Alibi channel. It's easy to forget there was life before No Man's Sky at Hello Games. The studio, which is still small now, started out tiny: "four people in a room" as co-founder Sean Murray puts it, somewhat wistfully, when the original team started work on the PS3's Joe Danger. We knew Hello Games' latest title would be arriving at some point this summer , but were any of you expecting it to arrive... tomorrow? Well, that's the official launch date announced today for The Last Campfire - which is coming to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Apple Arcade on 27th August. It's an adventure game following the story of Ember, who is trapped in a "puzzling place" and is "searching for meaning and a way home". Much like me after a night out. It's worth noting that the PC version of The Last Campfire is an Epic Games Store exclusive, so you may need to switch stores to give this one a try. Read more

Hello Games, the English studio behind No Man’s Sky and Joe Danger, announced The Last Campfire tonight. While they’re still working on No Man’s Sky, this is a game they classify as a “Hello Games Short”, a wee side-project made by two of their team.
