The Last Campfire been a huge undertaking for a tiny team at Hello, and releasing on Steam marks a major milestone for the team. Fresh from porting Joe Danger to mobile (nearly 6 years ago!) a designer, Stevie, started a passion project which became The Last Campfire. Later he was joined by Chris who made every bit of art you see in Campfire. Then finally the team completed when James joined as programmer to help bring the whole thing together. Everything in the game is the work of these three guys over, in some cases, a large number of years. A special mention should be given to producer Jen who kept everyone on track as release dates were looming. Like many teams, we went from seeing each other every…

  • Hello Games just made a free update to their singleplayer puzzle game too - 9 April 2021

Hello Games, the same folks behind No Man's Sky , launched a smaller puzzle adventure game last year that you may have missed hearing about. Clearly Hello Games themselves didn't forget about The Last Campfire , because they've just released a free update that actually adds new puzzles to the game. I know we've gotten quite used to the regular updates to their online space adventure, but should we tell them they don't actually need to do that for a singleplayer game? Okay, nah, let's not tell them. Read more

  • Hello Games' The Last Campfire adds 20% more puzzling in free new update - 9 April 2021

Hello Games' charming narrative puzzler The Last Campfire is getting a free new update today on all platforms, adding new puzzles, performance improvements, and more. The Last Campfire, if you've not yet had the pleasure, follows the adventures of "a lost Ember trapped in a puzzling place, searching for meaning and a way home". It's the work of a small team within Hello Games, which includes Steven Burgess and Chris Symonds, respectively the lead designer and lead artist on Frontier Development's fondly remembered Wii platform adventure LostWinds - a title which The Last Campfire's delicate ambience and exploratory puzzling brings to mind. • The Last Campfire review - puzzles abound in an elegant story of hope - 3 September 2020

I would love to know how The Last Campfire was made. Not the coding or the art, which I'll happily admit I would not understand even if I had a lifetime of education ahead of me. But the thinking behind the design. This is a puzzle game in which puzzles are everywhere - puzzles of different types, of different approaches, puzzles operating at different levels of the construction. Somewhere I imagine a huge wall filled with paper and bits of string - one of those evidence walls from the kind of shows you get on the Alibi channel. Every idea, every gimmick, every buried connection between one part and another. Beautiful! The Last Campfire is a game about puzzles and lost hope, I think. It's also a follow up of sorts to the Lost Winds games from yesteryear. There's the same core team, but also the same preoccupations - lonely rock warmed by the sun, unruly patches of grass, a faith, deep d…

  • Chasing the dream of four people in a room - 28 August 2020

It's easy to forget there was life before No Man's Sky at Hello Games. The studio, which is still small now, started out tiny: "four people in a room" as co-founder Sean Murray puts it, somewhat wistfully, when the original team started work on the PS3's Joe Danger. Speaking to Murray and Steven Burgess, who's taking the lead on The Last Campfire, the curiously mournful puzzle-adventure that arrived via surprise release yesterday, the focus is very much on that kind of independent spirit. There's some nostalgia there, when Murray talks over the studio's history, starting with the now-familiar story of the humble Joe Danger roots and how the team quickly ballooned to "15 or 16" people on No Man's Sky at the peak, before settling on the 25 that make up the internal Hello Games team now. But the core team's not the one working on The Last Campfire. Burgess, alongside Chris Symonds and Jame…

Here’s a surprise treat for the fellow puzzle adventure fans. Hello Games have announced that their adorable game The Last Campfire will launch tomorrow, August 27th. • Hello Games' The Last Campfire releases tomorrow - 26 August 2020

We knew Hello Games' latest title would be arriving at some point this summer , but were any of you expecting it to arrive... tomorrow? Well, that's the official launch date announced today for The Last Campfire - which is coming to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Apple Arcade on 27th August. It's an adventure game following the story of Ember, who is trapped in a "puzzling place" and is "searching for meaning and a way home". Much like me after a night out. • Here are the first minutes of Hello Games' The Last Campfire - 8 April 2020

Hello Games are of course the folks behind giant space sandbox No Man’s Sky , so their next game, The Last Campfire , came as quite a surprise when it was announced in 2018. It’s a much smaller game, not nearly an entire universe, about a little traveler named Ember. Hello have now shared a new video to tell us more about the adventure puzzler that’s due out this summer. • Hello Games lighting The Last Campfire this summer - 17 March 2020

Hello Games today announced a summer launch for The Last Campfire , their cute little explore-o-puzzler about a little lost ember trying to get home. The No Man’s Sky studio announced The Last Campfire in December 2018 for a 2019 launch, long enough ago that I’d actually forgotten about it. Hey, here it is again! Now almost out! And with a new trailer! Looking like this: (more…)

  • No Man s Sky studio announce The Last Campfire - 7 December 2018

Hello Games, the English studio behind No Man’s Sky and Joe Danger, announced The Last Campfire tonight. While they’re still working on No Man’s Sky, this is a game they classify as a “Hello Games Short”, a wee side-project made by two of their team. Those two worked on LostWinds , the colourful platformer about controlling the wind, so they know a thing or two about cute adventures. Here, have a peek in the announcement trailer. (more…)

  • No Man's Sky dev Hello Games reveals new adventure The Last Campfire - 7 December 2018

Hello Games has unveiled The Last Campfire, the studio's first new project since its space exploration sim No Man's Sky launched in 2016. The Last Campfire is predominantly the work of two people within Hello Games - Steven Burgess and Chris Symonds, respectively the lead designer and lead artist on Frontier Developments' fondly remembered Wii platform adventure LostWinds. According to Hello Games, The Last Campfire tells the story of "a lost Ember trapped in a puzzling place, searching for meaning and a way home". Beyond that, details are a little light, although the experience, which certainly has a touch of LostWinds' delicate atmosphere about it based on the announcement trailer below, supposedly unfolds in "a beautiful wilderness filled with lost folk, strange creatures and mysterious ruins."
